This position, based at Mowbray Maternity Hospital within the Metro Health Services directorate, is a senior nursing role dedicated to the coordination and oversight of clinical education and training. The Clinical Programme Co-ordinator operates within the Nursing Clinical Education and Training Unit and is responsible for shaping the strategic direction of nurse development at the facility. The role focuses on integrating teaching and learning into clinical practice, supporting hospital management, and ensuring that training interventions align with both healthcare standards and regulatory requirements. This is an OSD-graded post, meaning it follows the Occupation Specific Dispensation for nursing professionals, and it offers an opportunity to influence patient care through the development of a skilled and competent nursing workforce.
Candidates must meet a recognised nursing qualification standard, either a basic R425 diploma or degree in nursing, or an equivalent combination of qualifications as stipulated by the South African Nursing Council, alternatively a four-year bachelor’s degree in nursing. In all cases, current registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse is mandatory. Applicants need at least seven years of appropriate and recognisable experience in nursing after registration in general nursing. The role also carries inherent requirements, including a willingness to assist accredited higher education institutions with external practical examinations of students, to work overtime when needed, to provide hospital relief, and to hold a valid Code B or EB drivers’ licence. Strong knowledge of nursing education and training, particularly in a perinatal clinical setting, is essential, alongside specialised perinatal healthcare knowledge. The successful candidate must demonstrate effective leadership, supervision, planning, coordination, organising, facilitation, mentoring, problem-solving, decision-making, and conflict-resolution skills. The ability to engage, network, and liaise with diverse stakeholders is equally important, as is extensive knowledge of relevant legislation and frameworks, including the Nursing Act, SANC education and training regulations, the Skills Development Act, departmental training and development policies, and broader public service regulations, labour relations and grievance procedures.
The core duties of the post involve managing the overall coordination of clinical teaching and learning, developing operational plans that provide strategic direction to nurse education and training at the hospital, and offering professional and technical support to ensure quality patient care through both formal and informal training. The co-ordinator will participate in maintaining norms and standards of nursing practice, establishing and sustaining inter-professional and multidisciplinary teamwork, and contributing to the development and implementation of hospital quality assurance programmes, guidelines, protocols, and norms. The role also requires using information technology and management systems to support training and development, as well as the effective management and utilisation of human, financial, and physical resources, in line with relevant directives and legislation.
Applications are submitted online as specified in the advertisement, and no payment of any kind is required. Shortlisted candidates may be subjected to a practical test as part of the selection process. Enquiries may be directed to the contact person listed in the vacancy notice. The post is advertised through a provincial circular, and interested nurses with the required experience and a passion for clinical education are encouraged to apply.
