This position offers a four-year contract as a Registrar in Dermatology at Tygerberg Hospital in Parow Valley, with two posts available. Working within the Department of Health’s specialist training platform, the successful candidates will be part of a multidisciplinary team delivering tertiary-level dermatology services while completing the academic and clinical requirements for specialist registration. The role is based primarily at Tygerberg Hospital, where registrars contribute to a weekday outpatient dermatology service, the dedicated dermatology ward, and inpatient consultations across other hospital departments, but it also includes travelling to outreach facilities and working across the approved training platform as needed.
Applicants must hold a qualification that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Medical Practitioner, and must already be registered with the HPCSA in Independent Practice. A valid Code B or EB driver’s licence is an inherent requirement, along with willingness to perform compulsory commuted overtime and participate in emergency and after-hours cover according to the departmental roster. The ideal candidate will have appropriate clinical knowledge and judgement gained after the MBChB, strong communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to work under pressure within a multidisciplinary team, computer literacy, and a clear commitment to ethical, patient-centred care and specialist training. Relevant dermatology clinical experience, a completed postgraduate degree or diploma in a dermatology-related field, and publications or research experience are also listed as desirable competencies.
In terms of duties, the registrar provides safe dermatology care under specialist supervision across outpatient clinics, the dermatology ward, and inpatient consultations, and performs dermatological procedures suited to their level of training. The role also requires maintaining accurate clinical records, referral and discharge documentation, and completing allocated hospital and university administrative tasks. Teaching forms a key part of the post, with registrars expected to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate education and to supervise junior staff and students where appropriate. Attendance at academic programmes and assessments is compulsory, and registrars must keep the required portfolio and logbook, complete the prescribed specialist training requirements, take part in dermatology research and clinical audits, and finish the MMed research component.
Several important conditions apply. Appointment is for a maximum of four years and no payment is required when applying. Registrars may be seconded or transferred to another hospital or institution during training, and affected staff will be consulted first. They are expected to function across health facilities according to an agreed programme, and registration as a postgraduate student with Stellenbosch University is required. If that university registration is discontinued for any reason, the registrar appointment also ends. Existing employees who are already on higher salary packages may retain their current salary position and remain entitled to pay progression, but those who continue pension benefits and are later unsuccessful for advertised specialist posts must resign after completing their registrarship. The Department of Health applies employment equity principles, and specific registrar posts may be identified as part of an affirmative action programme to build a representative specialist cadre. Candidates with disabilities are encouraged to apply, and preference will be given to South African citizens or permanent residents with a valid identity document. Applicants who do not yet have the required professional registration may still apply under a concession, provided they submit proof of application for registration and payment of the registration fee on or before the interview date, but this applies only to first-time registration in the specific category.
