The South African Police Service is advertising data typist vacancies within its operational command centres in the North West Province. These positions are based at the Provincial Operational Command Centre in Potchefstroom and at District Operational Command Centres in Vryburg, Rustenburg and Stilfontein. Successful candidates will be expected to work shifts, as the role supports the round-the-clock information management needs of the policing environment. As data typists, incumbents will form part of an administrative team responsible for ensuring that information captured on SAPS systems is accurate, complete and up to date, which is essential to effective police operations and service delivery.
Applicants must be South African citizens who are able to furnish documentary proof of citizenship on the day of the interview. A Grade 12 Senior Certificate, National Certificate Vocational Level 4, or an equivalent qualification recognised by SAQA at NQF Level 4 is required. Relevant training or short courses in data capturing, office administration or a related field will be an added advantage. Candidates must be proficient in English and at least one other official language. They should be generally computer literate, particularly in MS Word, MS Excel, MS Office, MS PowerPoint and MS Outlook, and must be able to work independently while remaining professional, accountable and credible. Strong verbal and written communication, planning, organising, administrative, problem-solving and interpersonal skills are also essential, along with customer focus, responsiveness and a willingness to work shifts.
The main duties of the post include capturing, updating and maintaining information accurately on SAPS systems and databases; verifying and processing information received from source documents; identifying and correcting data discrepancies and omissions; and maintaining both physical and electronic records and documentation. Data typists will also compile basic statistics, reports and registers as required, provide general administrative and data capturing support to the component, and administer correspondence and files. Confidentiality and the security of SAPS information are critical, and incumbents must comply with all applicable policies, procedures, instructions and prescribed timeframes. They are expected to perform any other related duties as directed by the supervisor, maintain a high level of discipline, adhere to the SAPS Code of Conduct, and contribute to enhancing police professionalism and the delivery of professional police services.
Applications must be submitted on the prescribed Z83 form, accompanied by a comprehensive curriculum vitae, and each application must correctly specify the post particulars and reference number. A separate application form is required for each post. It is the responsibility of applicants to ensure that their applications reach the correct physical address before the closing date, as late applications and those sent to the wrong address will not be considered. Shortlisted candidates will be required to produce original identity documents, qualifications, service certificates from previous employers and a motor vehicle driver’s licence before the interview. Qualifications and licences will be verified with the relevant institutions, and appointments are subject to security clearance, fingerprint screening, reference checking and address verification. Shortlisted candidates will also undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment. Candidates must have no previous criminal convictions or pending criminal or departmental cases. Those whose names appear on the National Register for Sex Offenders or Part B of the Child Protection Register will be disqualified, and candidates must disclose any interim or final protection orders against them. New appointees will be required to provide a buccal sample for DNA profiling in terms of the Criminal Law (Forensic Procedures) Amendment Act. People who retired from the Public Service through severance, early retirement or medical retirement, as well as those with previous convictions, are excluded. The SAPS is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer that aims to promote representivity in the Public Service.
