The Department of Social Development is seeking a Community Development Supervisor to be based at the John Taolo Gaetsewe District in Kuruman. This is a supervisory-level post within the community development field, graded in accordance with the Occupation-Specific Dispensation (OSD) determination, and forms part of the departmental effort to drive integrated, community-driven development across the district. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a team of community development practitioners, ensuring that interventions are well-coordinated, sustainable, and aligned with both the needs of local communities and the broader legislative and policy framework governing social development in South Africa.

Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s Degree at NQF Level 7 in Community Development, Development Studies, or a related Social Science discipline, coupled with a valid driver’s licence. A minimum of seven years of recognisable experience in community development is required, and this experience must have been gained after the completion of the formal qualification. The role calls for a strong understanding of human behaviour, social systems, and social dynamics, as well as the relevant legislation that supports interventions at the point where people interact with their environments. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to coordinate community development structures, manage projects, and influence individuals and groups to participate in their own self-empowerment initiatives. Additional competencies include presentation and problem-solving skills, computer literacy, strong written and verbal communication, research and report writing, financial management, and sound supervisory abilities.

The core duties of the position involve supervising the identification, facilitation, and implementation of integrated community development interventions in partnership with communities and stakeholders. The supervisor will support and guide community development practitioners to ensure effective communication and coordination with both internal role players and external partners such as other government departments, provincial bodies, non-governmental organisations, local community structures, and faith-based organisations. This collaboration is aimed at fostering intersectoral coordination, integrated planning, and sustainable partnerships that benefit community development activities. The supervisor will also mentor, coach, and advise practitioners to enhance their performance and ensure an efficient, effective service. In addition, the role includes managing the sub-unit, providing administrative and educational support, and carrying out monitoring and evaluation of non-profit organisations operating within the community development space. Keeping abreast of new developments in the field is essential to improve service delivery continuously.

Candidates should note that this is a public service position with specific conditions. Shortlisted applicants will be required to produce certified copies of their qualifications, identity document, and driver’s licence, and social service professionals must provide proof of registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) as well as certificates of service. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). All shortlisted candidates will undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity ethical conduct assessment, and may be subjected to personnel suitability checks, criminal record checks, and security clearance processes. The successful candidate will serve a twelve-month probation period, and the department reserves the right not to fill the post. Interviews will be conducted at the Provincial Office in Kimberley, and only shortlisted applicants will be contacted.
