The Department of Health in Limpopo is advertising three Nursing Assistant posts at the Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3 levels, with one position based at each of Mokopane Hospital, Evuxakeni Hospital and Philadelphia Hospital. This is a shift-working role, meaning incumbents must be available for after-hours duty, on-call responsibilities and rotating shifts. The position is open to qualified nursing assistants registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) and offers an opportunity to work within a public health facility delivering essential patient care. The grading of the post depends on the candidate’s years of appropriate experience after registration as a nursing assistant, making this an accessible entry point for newly qualified practitioners as well as a career progression opportunity for those with substantial service.
Applicants must hold a National Senior Certificate, Grade 12 or Matric, together with a qualification that allows registration with the SANC as a Nursing Assistant. Current registration with the SANC is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, no post-registration experience is required, which suits recently qualified candidates. Grade 2 requires a minimum of ten years of appropriate and recognisable experience as a nursing assistant after registration, while Grade 3 requires at least twenty years of such experience. Beyond formal qualifications, the department is looking for individuals with basic knowledge of the laws governing the nursing profession, sound clinical and communication skills, professionalism, ethical practice, an ability to work in teams, keen observation and reporting abilities, and a willingness to support health education and continue learning.
The core duties involve implementing nursing care within the scope of practice of a nursing assistant, helping patients with activities of daily living such as physical care, providing elementary clinical nursing care, and maintaining professional growth, ethical standards and self-development. This is a hands-on role that requires compassion, reliability and close collaboration with other members of the healthcare team. Successful candidates will be expected to observe patients’ conditions accurately, report concerns appropriately and contribute to a safe and supportive environment in the hospital wards.
As with all public service posts, shortlisted applicants will be invited for interviews and must produce certified copies of their qualifications, SANC registration and identity documents. The selection process may also include pre-entry assessments, such as a practical exercise and an integrity or ethical conduct assessment, which form part of the interview scoring. Candidates with foreign qualifications are responsible for having them evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority. These posts are ideal for nursing assistants who are committed to delivering quality care in a hospital setting and who understand the demands of shift work. The Limpopo Department of Health encourages suitably qualified candidates to consider these vacancies at the three named hospitals and to ensure their applications fully comply with the requirements before submission.
