The Limpopo Department of Health is advertising nine Artisan Grade A to C posts, all subject to shift work, across a range of healthcare facilities and the provincial office. The vacancies are primarily for plumbers at Philadelphia, Kgapane, Hayani, Pietersburg, Dilokong and Thabamoopo Hospitals, with one electrician post at Jane Furse Hospital, one mechanical artisan post at the Provincial Office, and one further artisan post at Nkhensani Hospital. This is an OSD-graded employment opportunity, meaning the salary level is determined by the successful candidate’s relevant experience after obtaining their trade qualification.

To qualify, applicants must have an appropriate Trade Test Certificate. Appointment to Grade A requires up to 16 years of relevant experience after obtaining the trade test, Grade B requires between 18 and 32 years, and Grade C requires 33 years or more of such experience. Candidates must be willing to perform standby duties after hours, over weekends, on public holidays, and during overtime when the need arises. A valid driver’s licence is essential, except for people with disabilities, who are exempt from this requirement. Computer literacy is compulsory, including MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and familiarity with virtual meeting platforms. In addition, candidates should possess strong technical analysis and technical report writing skills, the ability to use computer-aided technical applications, and the capacity to read and interpret manufacturing and architectural drawings. Knowledge of legal compliance, particularly the Occupational Health and Safety Act, is essential, as is budgeting and financial management skill. The ideal candidate will demonstrate good communication, problem-solving, decision-making, planning, organising, mentoring, coaching, teamwork, analytical, self-management and customer-focused competencies.

The core duties include maintaining and repairing technical faults related to electrical, welding and plumbing systems; testing repaired equipment or facilities against specifications; servicing equipment and facilities; and keeping a detailed job register of all maintenance and repair work performed. The artisan will also be responsible for managing and supervising human resources within the work area, so leadership and people management abilities are important.

Shortlisted applicants will be required to attend interviews and must bring certified copies of their qualifications, identity document, and any relevant registration. They will also undertake two pre-entry assessments, one practical exercise and one integrity or ethical conduct assessment, both of which are scored as additional criteria during the interview process. Applicants with foreign qualifications must have them evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority and provide proof of that evaluation. This is a technically demanding role suited to experienced artisans who are comfortable working in a healthcare environment, often under pressure and outside normal working hours.
