This position offers an opportunity for qualified professional nurses with midwifery training to join the Limpopo Department of Health across a wide network of hospitals in the province. The role is available at Grade 1 and Grade 2 levels and involves shift work, including after-hours duty and being on call. As a professional nurse, you will be expected to deliver comprehensive nursing care within a hospital setting, applying the legal and ethical frameworks that govern healthcare in South Africa. The post is part of the department’s broader effort to strengthen institutional nursing capacity, with placements spread across more than twenty hospitals, ranging from larger regional facilities to smaller district hospitals in both urban and rural areas. A rural allowance is attached to the position, reflecting the department’s commitment to attracting skilled staff to underserved communities.
To qualify, applicants must hold a National Senior Certificate or equivalent, together with a Basic R425 qualification—either a diploma or degree in nursing—that enables registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. Current SANC registration in general nursing is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, no prior nursing experience after registration is required, making this suitable for recently qualified nurses. Grade 2 applicants must have at least ten years of appropriate and recognisable experience in general nursing after registration. In addition to formal qualifications, candidates need sound knowledge of nursing care processes, procedures, and the relevant legal frameworks. Strong clinical skills, the ability to work under pressure, and strict adherence to infection control principles are crucial, as is effective communication with patients, families, and colleagues. The department also looks for personal qualities such as integrity, professionalism, attention to detail, accountability, reliability, and a proactive, results-oriented approach. Being calm under pressure, adaptable, and a committed team player are essential attributes, along with a willingness to engage in continuous learning and uphold the Batho Pele principles of service delivery.
The core duties of the role involve practising nursing and healthcare in line with laws and regulations, maintaining constructive working relationships with all team members, and using human, material, and physical resources efficiently and effectively. This means not only delivering direct patient care, especially in maternal and neonatal areas given the midwifery component, but also contributing to the smooth functioning of the hospital unit through teamwork and resource management. Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents and must be willing to embrace shift work and on-call responsibilities. The application process requires careful attention to the instructions, including the completion of the new Z83 form accompanied by a comprehensive CV. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interviews, where certified copies of qualifications, current registration, and identity documents must be submitted, and they will also undergo pre-entry assessments. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA. This is a substantial career opportunity for nurses seeking to serve in the public health sector within Limpopo.
