This is a senior nursing management position within Limpopo’s public health services, advertised as Operational Manager Nursing in the Primary Health Care stream, graded on the Occupation Specific Dispensation and requiring shift work. The successful candidates will be placed across a large number of clinics and community health centres in the Capricorn, Mopani, Vhembe, Waterberg and Sekhukhune districts, with each post based at a specific facility. The role is a re-advertisement, and it is aimed at professional nurses ready to take operational responsibility for a primary health care facility or unit, ensuring that nursing care is delivered safely, ethically and in line with the legal and professional standards of the South African Nursing Council and the Department of Health.
Applicants need a National Senior Certificate or Grade 12/Matric plus a basic R425 nursing diploma or degree, or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the SANC as a professional nurse. They must also hold a post-basic nursing qualification of at least one year, accredited by the SANC, in a specialty relevant to primary health care. The experience requirement is substantial: at least nine years of appropriate and recognisable nursing experience after registration as a professional nurse, and at least five of those years must have been gained after completing the relevant post-basic specialty qualification. Candidates must be willing to work day and night shifts, weekends, public holidays and overtime on short notice. Computer literacy in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and virtual meeting platforms is required, as is a valid driver’s licence, unless the applicant has a disability that prevents driving.
The main duties involve coordinating and supervising comprehensive nursing care within the primary health care setting. The operational manager is expected to ensure that care complies with the professional and service framework, to participate in the management of the unit, and to use physical, financial and human resources effectively to fulfil operational and developmental functions. This includes clinical governance, monitoring the quality of care, managing budgets and supplies, overseeing staff performance through the Performance Management and Development System, and supporting the implementation of relevant legislation and public health policies. The position also requires strong leadership, sound decision-making, conflict resolution skills and the ability to work independently under pressure. A good understanding of the primary health care package of services, disease management, patient information systems and project management activities is essential, as are excellent communication and interpersonal relations.
Candidates should demonstrate integrity, professionalism, attention to detail, accountability, reliability and a proactive, results-oriented approach. The role demands calmness under pressure, adaptability to change, and a commitment to continuous learning and Batho Pele principles. Qualifying appointees may receive a rural allowance in line with applicable public service policy, and the position is OSD-graded. The advertised posts are spread across numerous clinics and community health centres, including rural and semi-rural facilities, making this an opportunity for experienced nurse managers to contribute directly to community-based health service delivery in Limpopo. Employment equity considerations may apply, and persons with disabilities and other designated groups are encouraged to apply.
