The Amajuba Health District Office, operating under the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health, is seeking a responsible and experienced Driver to join its Transport component. This role is central to the smooth functioning of the district’s health services, as the incumbent will be tasked with moving both passengers and goods to various destinations as directed. Working from the district office in Newcastle, the driver supports clinical and administrative staff by ensuring reliable and safe transport, while also maintaining the department’s vehicles to a high standard. The position is a permanent government post, and the successful candidate will be expected to operate within the broader public service framework, upholding the Batho Pele principles of service delivery.
To be considered for this position, applicants must hold a Grade 10 (Standard 8) certificate or an equivalent qualification recognised by SAQA. A valid Code EC driver’s licence is essential, as is a Professional Driving Permit (PDP). Candidates need at least five years of practical driving experience. Beyond these basics, the department is looking for someone with strong driving skills, the ability to read and write, good communication and interpersonal abilities, and a high level of self-discipline. Sound time management is also critical, as the driver must adhere to schedules and respond to transport requests efficiently. A working knowledge of the National Road Traffic Act and departmental policies is expected, and familiarity with Batho Pele principles is a key behavioural requirement.
The duties of the post are wide-ranging and demand attention to detail. The driver will transport passengers and goods as instructed, conduct proper inspections of the vehicle before and after each trip, and perform routine checks as part of preventative maintenance. Protecting the vehicle from damage and theft is a core responsibility, which includes parking in safe areas and activating all security devices. Any faults, incidents, or accidents must be reported promptly to the Transport Officer or Supervisor, and to the police where necessary. The driver is also responsible for maintaining prescribed records and log sheets relating to vehicle usage and transported goods, and for keeping government vehicles clean by washing and vacuuming them properly. Throughout all duties, full compliance with road traffic legislation and departmental regulations is mandatory.
There are several important conditions attached to this vacancy. The department encourages Indian males and people with disabilities to apply. All appointments will be subject to security vetting, criminal and credit checks, citizenship verification, qualification validation through SAQA, and confirmation of previous employment. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments, one practical and one focused on integrity. Applicants must complete the prescribed Z83 form and attach a detailed CV, with certified documents requested only from those shortlisted. It is also noted that no payment will be made for subsistence and travel claims, and candidates who do not receive feedback within three months of the closing date should regard their applications as unsuccessful.
