This position offers an opportunity for a qualified and registered ultrasound radiographer to join the diagnostic imaging team at Ladysmith Regional Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering safe, timely and high-quality diagnostic ultrasound services across a broad spectrum of clinical applications. These include obstetric and gynaecological scanning, general abdominal and pelvic examinations, as well as cardiac, vascular and musculoskeletal ultrasound studies. Working within a multidisciplinary hospital environment, the radiographer will be expected to operate independently as well as collaboratively, always prioritising patient-centred care, dignity and informed consent while adhering to the relevant professional, ethical and regulatory standards.
To be considered, applicants must hold a Senior Certificate or Grade 12 together with an appropriate qualification that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Ultrasound Radiographer (Independent Practitioner). Current registration with the HPCSA and an annual practice certificate are essential. Candidates with foreign qualifications must attach a SAQA evaluation certificate confirming equivalence. The post is graded according to the Occupational Specific Dispensation, with entry-level applicants requiring no post-registration experience if they completed community service in South Africa, while foreign-qualified candidates need at least one year of appropriate experience. Higher grades require a minimum of ten or twenty years of relevant experience after HPCSA registration. The ideal candidate will have sound knowledge of ultrasound scanning techniques, protocols and procedures, as well as radiation control regulations, infection prevention measures, quality assurance processes and occupational health and safety requirements. Strong communication, report-writing, administrative and computer skills are essential, along with good interpersonal relations and the ability to work both in a team and autonomously.
The core duties include performing and accurately interpreting ultrasound examinations, issuing clear diagnostic reports, and managing the full patient journey from reception and appointment coordination through to registration and aftercare. The radiographer must also maintain accurate clinical records, examination registers and service statistics, while supporting daily workflow and referral pathways. Equipment care, fault reporting and participation in quality assurance activities, clinical audits and patient safety initiatives are integral to the role. In addition, the post involves providing guidance, supervision, mentorship and practical training to junior staff and students. The department is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer and actively encourages persons with disabilities to apply. The appointment is subject to security clearance and other verification checks, including qualifications, citizenship, credit records and previous employment history. Only shortlisted candidates will be required to produce certified documents, and all applications must be submitted using the prescribed Z83 form and CV, with the reference number clearly indicated. This is a demanding but rewarding position for a radiographer who is committed to public service excellence, continuous improvement and the principles of Batho Pele.
