The department responsible for Gauteng’s provincial road network is advertising ten Road Worker posts, with five positions based in Tshwane and five in Johannesburg. This is an entry-level, practically focused role within the broader road maintenance environment, and the successful candidates will join teams that work across the whole of Gauteng. Because the work is undertaken throughout the province, staff should be prepared to travel and, when necessary, sleep close to the various construction sites where maintenance and repair activities are taking place. The role is suited to individuals who are willing to work under pressure, can read and write, and are comfortable functioning as part of a cohesive team.
No formal work experience is required, making this an excellent opportunity for those entering the public service workforce. The minimum educational requirement is an NQF level 1 qualification, or an ABET level 4 certificate or equivalent. Good communication skills are considered an added advantage. Applicants should also be able to demonstrate a willingness to work outdoors in a physically demanding environment and to follow safety protocols at all times.
The core duties involve undertaking routine road construction and maintenance in line with approved work programmes and safety standards. This includes pothole patching, crack sealing, surfacing and re-gravelling of roads, as well as constructing, repairing and maintaining road earthworks, culverts, side drains, stormwater drainage systems, ditches, outlets and concrete channels. Road workers will also be responsible for cleaning and maintaining road reserves, sidewalks, drainage structures, rest areas and other road infrastructure. Further duties include installing, replacing, repairing and cleaning road traffic signs, road markings, delineators and other road furniture; assisting with the erection, repair and maintenance of road fencing, steel guardrails, gabions and pipe-laying works; and operating and maintaining hand tools, small plant and specialised equipment according to departmental procedures. Safeguarding departmental tools, equipment and materials issued for official duties, and immediately reporting any losses or defects, is also expected. Road workers must maintain a clean and safe work site and comply with occupational health and safety requirements, as well as assist with traffic accommodation and any other road maintenance activities directed by the supervisor.
Candidates should note that the post is subject to standard public service appointment conditions. The selection process may include a personal interview, a practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability, and an integrity assessment. Shortlisted applicants will be vetted through security screening, fingerprint checks, reference checking and verification of address. Applicants must have no previous criminal convictions or pending cases, and may be required to disclose any protection orders. The employer is committed to equal opportunity and affirmative action, and preference will be given to candidates whose appointment promotes representivity in the public service.
