The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment is seeking a reliable and responsible Driver/Messenger to join its Corporate Services division, specifically within the Facilities and Security component, based in Bedfordview. This is an entry-level support role within the public service that plays a critical part in the smooth day-to-day operations of the department by ensuring the efficient movement of official documentation, mail, and parcels. The position is ideal for a candidate who is organised, trustworthy, and able to work with minimal supervision, as the role involves regular travel between Bedfordview, Johannesburg, and Pretoria to collect and deliver official items.

Applicants must hold a minimum of Grade 10 and possess a valid driver’s licence. A clean criminal record is essential, as the role involves handling confidential and sensitive documents. While no prior work experience is required, candidates should have knowledge of planning and organising, customer management, quality management, relevant legislation, Public Service Regulations, communication practices, and the broader public service management framework. These competencies will help the incumbent carry out duties efficiently and in line with government standards.

The core responsibilities of the Driver/Messenger include collecting and delivering official documents and items from specified locations, registering all collections and deliveries, and ensuring that all handovers are properly signed for. The incumbent must promptly report any undelivered or uncollected documents to supervisors or managers, giving reasons for non-delivery. The role also involves handling compliance and progress reporting, which means submitting reports when required, providing quality information, maintaining a portfolio of evidence on work completed, and adhering to all due dates, processes, and procedures. Assistance to registry officials is also expected when needed.

A key part of the job involves securing and protecting confidential information. The Driver/Messenger must ensure that all documents collected or delivered are placed in sealed envelopes, handle all information with strict confidentiality, and keep accurate records of every collection and delivery. In addition, the role includes postal duties: collecting mail from the department’s private box, sorting it according to business units, delivering it to the correct officials, returning misdirected mail to the post office, registering and obtaining signatures for all mail, and stamping and sealing outgoing correspondence. The incumbent will also be responsible for the department’s messenger vehicle, ensuring it is used only for its intended purpose and kept clean at all times.

This post is an equal opportunity, affirmative action position. Preference may be given to appointable candidates from underrepresented designated groups in line with the department’s equity plan, and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Shortlisted applicants will be subjected to security screening and vetting, which may include criminal record checks, citizenship verification, creditworthiness assessment, reference checks, and qualification verification. Certified copies of qualifications, identity documents, and driver’s licences must be submitted by shortlisted candidates before the interview. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority. The department reserves the right not to appoint. Applicants who do not receive any response within three months of the closing date should assume their application was unsuccessful.
