The Assistant Director: Fleet Logistics position is based in Bedfordview within the Permanent Fleet directorate of the National Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment. This is a supervisory and operational management role at level 09, an OSD-graded post, focused on ensuring that the department’s fleet operations run efficiently, lawfully, and in line with government transport policies. The incumbent will be responsible for coordinating the entire fleet lifecycle from vehicle specification and allocation, through licensing and registration, to end-of-term returns and handover to Asset Management. The role also involves managing Full Maintenance Lease contracts, monitoring vehicle roadworthiness, and liaising with internal and external stakeholders on vehicle fitments and regulatory compliance.
Candidates must hold a minimum three-year National Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Transportation, Logistics, Public Management and Administration, or a related degree, and possess a valid B/EB driver’s licence. They need between three and five years of functional experience in a Fleet Management Services environment, including practical knowledge of managing Full Maintenance Lease contracts. Proficiency in MS Excel is essential, as the role requires compiling utilisation analyses from multiple data sources. A broader understanding of fleet logistics management, supply chain and logistics operations, fleet maintenance management, legislative and regulatory compliance, financial management, fleet information systems, risk and operational management, and performance monitoring and reporting is also required.
Key duties include implementing prescribed policies and promoting the Code of Conduct for the Public Service, monitoring compliance with internal controls, and participating in the development and review of standard operating procedures. The post holder will maintain records to support internal and external audits, monitor the vehicle preparation and allocation process, verify roadworthiness, and coordinate the end-to-end licensing and registration process. They will also oversee vehicle dispatch, verify data captured on the Fleet Information System, and manage the returns and replacements of vehicles at contract expiry. Contract management under Full Maintenance Lease agreements forms a central part of the role, along with compiling monthly and quarterly reports on fleet leasing deliverables, advising on contract restructuring, and maintaining accurate vehicle records.
As a supervisory position, the role includes managing staff performance, work allocation, attendance and leave, providing operational guidance, monitoring financial and operational resources, implementing operational plans, and maintaining the operational risk register for fleet logistics activities. The department is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer, and preference may be given to appointable applicants from underrepresented designated groups in line with its equity plan. Persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Shortlisted candidates will undergo screening, security vetting, reference checks, and qualification verification. Correspondence is limited to successful candidates, and applicants should ensure all required information is disclosed, as incomplete applications will be disqualified. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA, and certified copies of qualifications, identity documents and driver’s licences must be submitted by shortlisted candidates before the interview.
