This vacancy is for three Boiler Assistant posts within the Maintenance component of Gauteng Provincial Treasury, based at the Laundry facility in Dunswart. The role supports the operational upkeep of boilers that are essential to the laundry’s daily activities. Working under the Maintenance directorate, the position is entry-level and forms part of a team responsible for ensuring boiler systems function safely, cleanly and efficiently in line with public works norms and standards. This is a hands-on role suited to individuals who value diligence, safety and teamwork in an industrial environment.

Candidates need a minimum of Grade 10 or Standard 8. No prior work experience is required, making this an accessible opportunity for entry-level job seekers. However, applicants should possess basic knowledge of low-pressure boiler norms and standards, maintenance works norms and standards, maintenance tools, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Key skills include sound interpersonal relations and the ability to use Public Works maintenance tools effectively. The department also looks for personal attributes such as being people-centred, professional, committed to collective responsibility and transformation, applying Batho Pele principles, paying attention to detail, and demonstrating honesty, integrity and strong ethics. These qualities are essential for maintaining trust and accountability in a public sector maintenance setting.

The main duties revolve around the daily operation and cleaning of boiler-related equipment. The assistant will help record boiler readings, trim coal and remove ash from the grit arrester, clean the boiler, boiler house and the surrounding environment, and perform regular maintenance of ash trolleys. The role also involves applying chemicals and salt to the brine tank as prescribed, cleaning the brine tank and water filter, correctly using protective clothing for both oneself and visitors, identifying and reporting safety hazards, and dusting or cleaning the boilers, boiler house, coal bunker area, chemical and brine tanks, as well as windows. This is a physically demanding position that prioritises hygiene, safety and compliance with health and safety regulations at all times.

Importantly, the department intends to promote equity through its Employment Equity Plan, and applicants are expected to indicate their race, gender and disability status to support the numeric targets. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted by human resources and required to submit certified documents before the interview. All suitable candidates will undergo personnel suitability checks covering criminal records, citizenship, credit record, qualifications and employment history, and final appointment depends on a positive security clearance. If applicants hold foreign qualifications, they are responsible for having them evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority. Applications must be submitted online and accompanied by a recent CV specifying dates and three reference persons. The department reserves the right to use practical exercises to determine suitability and may cancel or not fill the vacancy at any stage of the recruitment process.
