This position is for an Artisan Production: Mechanical Fitter, based at the Pretoria West Facility Maintenance Hub within the Department of Community Safety’s Maintenance directorate. The role is central to keeping the department’s physical facilities and equipment in a safe, functional and compliant condition. As a production artisan, you will be expected to work both independently and as part of a technical team, applying mechanical fitting expertise to design, produce, repair and maintain a range of objects and equipment to recognised standards. The post is graded for artisans, with an entry-level salary band that recognises experience gained after obtaining a trade test certificate, and shortlisted applicants will need to provide proof of that recognised experience.

To be considered, you must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate and have between zero and two years of relevant experience. A valid driver’s licence is also required. The department looks for candidates with working knowledge of Public Service legislation, policies and regulations, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, departmental policies and strategies, legal compliance, computer-aided technical applications, and production processes. In addition, you should demonstrate skills in technical report writing, problem solving and analysis, decision making, teamwork, creativity, analytical thinking, self-management, communication, computer use, and planning and organising. As a person, you need to be a team player, customer-focused and reliable.

Your main duties will cover the full production and maintenance cycle. This includes producing designs according to client specifications and within production capability, manufacturing objects using the correct materials and equipment, and ensuring quality assurance of everything produced. You will inspect equipment and facilities to identify technical faults, carry out repairs to standard, test repaired items against specifications, and service equipment according to schedule. You will also provide quality assurance for serviced and maintained equipment, compile and submit technical reports, and contribute inputs to the operational plan. Keeping an accurate job record or register is essential, as is supervising and mentoring more junior staff. The role also requires you to stay current with new technologies and procedures for continuous professional development.

There are important conditions attached to this vacancy. Applications must be submitted on the new Z83 form with all relevant sections completed and signed, accompanied by a comprehensive CV; only shortlisted candidates need to submit certified copies of qualifications. Foreign qualifications must have a SAQA evaluation certificate. The department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from designated groups including coloured, Indian and white applicants to apply, and a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner is required where applicable. Shortlisted candidates will undergo two pre-entry assessments, one practical and one integrity-based, and successful candidates will be subject to personnel suitability checks including criminal, credit, citizenship and qualification verification. The department reserves the right not to appoint and may use alternative recruitment processes. Due to the expected volume of applications, only shortlisted applicants will be contacted, and if you do not hear within three months of the closing date, you should consider your application unsuccessful.
