The Department of Community Safety is seeking a qualified and experienced Artisan Production: Mechanical Fitter to join its Tshwane District Maintenance Hub, specifically within the Mechanical Services component. This role sits within the broader Maintenance directorate, which is responsible for ensuring that departmental facilities, equipment, and infrastructure remain operational, safe, and fit for purpose. As a mechanical fitter in this production environment, the successful candidate will be expected to deliver high-quality mechanical outputs aligned with client specifications and departmental standards, while also contributing to the maintenance and repair of equipment and facilities across the district.

Applicants must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate, with a minimum of zero to two years of relevant experience being required. A valid driver’s licence is also mandatory. The ideal candidate will possess a solid understanding of Public Service legislation, policies, and regulations, as well as the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Knowledge of departmental policies, strategies, and procedures, legal compliance requirements, and production processes is essential. Familiarity with computer-aided technical applications and general computer skills is also expected. On a personal level, the role demands strong technical report writing abilities, problem-solving and analytical thinking, sound decision-making, teamwork, creativity, self-management, effective communication, and good planning and organising skills. The department values individuals who are team players, customer-focused, and reliable in their conduct and work ethic.

The duties of the position are broad and hands-on. The fitter will produce designs according to client specifications and within the limits of the production capability, using materials and equipment in line with job specifications and recognised standards. Quality assurance is a key part of the role, both for newly produced objects and for serviced or maintained equipment. The incumbent will inspect equipment and facilities for technical faults, carry out repairs according to standards, test repaired equipment against specifications, and service equipment according to scheduled maintenance plans. The role also requires compiling and submitting technical reports, providing inputs to the operational plan, keeping and maintaining job records or registers, and supervising and mentoring staff. To remain effective, the fitter must stay abreast of new technologies and procedures for continuous individual development.

This is an OSD-graded position offering a competitive salary with benefits, with the final offer based on recognition of experience after the trade test certificate. Shortlisted applicants will need to provide proof of recognised experience. The department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from designated groups, including coloured, Indian, and white applicants, to apply. A confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must be attached if applicable. All shortlisted candidates will undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment, and may be subject to personnel suitability checks such as vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification, and employment verification. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment and may utilise alternative recruitment processes. Placement will be made according to corridor coordination and departmental needs. Applicants who do not receive a response within three months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful.
