The Department of Community Safety is seeking a qualified and competent plumber to fill the role of Artisan Production: Plumber at the Kalafong Maintenance Hub. This position sits within the Maintenance component and is structured as an OSD-graded artisan post, with the initial salary offer depending on recognised experience gained after obtaining a trade test certificate. The successful candidate will be responsible for the full spectrum of plumbing production, maintenance, and repair work, ensuring that all outputs meet client specifications, legal compliance, and recognised quality standards within the public service environment.
Applicants must hold an appropriate trade test certificate and have between zero and two years of relevant experience, along with a valid driver's licence. The role demands a solid understanding of Public Service legislation, policies, regulations, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act, as well as knowledge of departmental strategies, procedures, and legal compliance requirements. Technical skills in computer-aided applications, production processes, and report writing are essential, supported by strong problem-solving, analytical, decision-making, planning, organising, and communication abilities. The ideal candidate will be a reliable team player with a customer-focused approach, capable of working independently and continuously developing their technical expertise.
The core duties involve producing designs and physical objects according to job specifications and production capability, using appropriate materials and equipment, and ensuring quality assurance of all outputs. The plumber will inspect equipment and facilities for technical faults, carry out repairs and testing against specifications, service equipment according to schedule, and verify the quality of serviced and maintained facilities. Administrative responsibilities include compiling and submitting reports, contributing inputs to the operational plan, keeping accurate job records and registers, and supervising or mentoring junior staff. Keeping abreast of new technologies and procedures is also required for continuous individual development.
Shortlisted candidates should note that proof of recognised experience will be requested, and all shortlisted applicants must undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise and an integrity or ethical conduct assessment. These technical exercises will be scored as an additional criterion during the interview process. Suitable candidates will also be subjected to personnel suitability checks including vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification verification, and employment verification. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. The Department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from designated groups to apply, and a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must be attached where applicable. The Department reserves the right not to make an appointment and may utilise alternative recruitment processes. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and applicants who do not receive any response within three months of the closing date should accept that their application was unsuccessful.
