This position is for an Artisan Production: Mechanical Fitter, with two posts available at the Tshwane Facility Maintenance Hub, operating within the Maintenance directorate of the Department of Community Safety. The role is an OSD-graded technical post, meaning the offered remuneration is determined by recognised post-trade experience, and successful candidates will form part of a maintenance team responsible for the physical upkeep and repair of departmental facilities and equipment. As a mechanical fitter, the incumbent will be expected to work both independently and as part of a team to ensure that all production and maintenance activities are completed to specification, safely and within the operational capacity of the hub.

Applicants must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate in mechanical fitting, and although a minimum of zero to two years’ experience is required, the department will verify any claimed experience for shortlisted candidates. A valid driver’s licence is essential. The ideal candidate should demonstrate knowledge of Public Service legislation, policies and regulations, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, departmental policies and procedures, legal compliance, computer-aided technical applications, and production processes. Key skills include technical report writing, problem solving, analytical thinking, decision making, planning and organising, self-management, communication, computer literacy, teamwork, and creativity. Personal attributes such as being a team player, customer-focused, and reliable are also important for success in this environment.

The core duties involve the full production and maintenance cycle. This includes producing designs according to client specifications and within production capability, manufacturing objects using appropriate materials and equipment in line with job specifications and recognised standards, and rendering quality assurance on produced items. The fitter will also inspect equipment and facilities to identify technical faults, carry out repairs to standard, and test repaired equipment or facilities against specifications. Scheduled servicing of equipment and facilities is required, along with quality assurance of serviced and maintained systems. Administrative and supervisory responsibilities include compiling and submitting reports, providing inputs to the operational plan, maintaining job records and registers, and supervising and mentoring junior staff. The role also requires a commitment to continuous professional development by keeping abreast of new technologies and procedures.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments, namely a practical exercise and an integrity or ethical conduct assessment, with the technical exercise also being scored as an additional criterion during the interview process. Suitable candidates will be subject to a personnel suitability check, including vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification verification, and employment verification. The department encourages applications from youth, people with disability, and from Coloured, Indian and White candidates, in line with equity targets, and any applicant with a disability must attach a confirmation certificate from a registered medical practitioner. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. It is important to note that the department will not accept posted, emailed or hand-delivered applications, and only shortlisted applicants will be contacted. If no response is received within three months of the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful. The department reserves the right not to appoint and may utilise other recruitment processes as needed, with placement determined according to corridor coordination and departmental needs.
