This vacancy is for an Artisan Production Grade A to C, specialising as a Mechanical Fitter within the Maintenance Directorate, specifically based at the Boilers unit in Tshwane. The role forms part of the department’s technical maintenance component, where the incumbent will be responsible for ensuring that boiler-related equipment and facilities are produced, repaired, serviced and maintained to the required standards. As a production-grade artisan, the position is centred on both hands-on technical work and the application of engineering and safety principles within a public service environment.

Applicants must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate and have between zero and two years of relevant experience. A valid driver’s licence is also required. The role demands a solid working knowledge of Public Service legislation, policies and regulations, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, departmental policies and procedures, legal compliance requirements, and production processes. Familiarity with computer-aided technical applications is essential, as are strong skills in technical report writing, problem solving, analysis, decision making, teamwork, creativity, self-management, communication and computer use. Candidates should also possess planning and organising skills and demonstrate attributes such as being a team player, customer-focused and reliable.

The duties are comprehensive and technical. The mechanical fitter will produce designs according to client specifications and within the production capability of the unit, manufacture objects using appropriate material and equipment in line with job specifications and recognised standards, and render quality assurance of produced items. The role also involves inspecting equipment and facilities for technical faults, repairing them according to standards, testing repaired equipment against specifications, and servicing equipment according to schedule. Quality assurance of serviced and maintained equipment is another key responsibility. The artisan must compile and submit reports, provide inputs to the operational plan, keep and maintain job records and registers, and supervise and mentor staff. Continuous professional development is expected, with the need to keep abreast of new technologies and procedures.

This is an OSD-graded position within the Public Service, and the offer is based on recognition of experience after the trade test certificate. Shortlisted applicants must be prepared to undergo the department’s selection process, which includes pre-entry assessments covering practical exercises and integrity or ethical conduct, as well as personnel suitability checks such as vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification and employment verification. The department encourages applications from youth, persons with disabilities, and designated groups including coloured, Indian and white candidates; a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must accompany such applications. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. The department reserves the right not to appoint and may use alternative recruitment processes. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and those who do not receive a response within three months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful.
