This position is for an Artisan Production Grade A-C specialising in electrical work, based at the Sebokeng Facility Maintenance Hub within the Maintenance directorate of the Department of Community Safety. The role is graded according to the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) and sits within a public service environment focused on keeping departmental facilities and equipment operational and safe. As the electrical artisan, you would be responsible for the full lifecycle of electrical production and maintenance work, from initial design through to final quality assurance, ensuring that all outputs meet recognised standards and client specifications.

To be considered, candidates must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate and have between zero and two years of relevant experience. A valid driver’s licence is also required. The department looks for people who combine technical expertise with knowledge of public service legislation, policies and regulations, as well as the Occupational Health and Safety Act and departmental strategies and procedures. Familiarity with computer-aided technical applications, legal compliance, and production processes is essential. Strong skills in technical report writing, problem solving and analysis, decision making, teamwork, creativity, analytical thinking, self-management, communication, computer literacy, and planning and organising are all expected. Personal attributes include being a team player, customer-focused and reliable.

The core duties revolve around producing electrical designs and objects according to client specifications and job standards, using appropriate materials and equipment. You will be expected to inspect equipment and facilities for technical faults, carry out repairs, and test repaired items against specifications. Scheduled servicing of equipment and facilities is also a key responsibility, followed by quality assurance checks to confirm everything works as intended. You will compile and submit technical reports, contribute inputs to the operational plan, maintain job records and registers, and provide supervision and mentorship to staff. The role also encourages continuous individual development, including keeping up with new technologies and procedures.

Several important conditions apply. Shortlisted candidates must undergo two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise and one integrity or ethical conduct assessment, and these technical exercises are scored as an additional criterion during interviews. Suitability checks will be conducted, including vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification and employment verification. The department encourages applications from youth, people with disabilities, coloured, Indian and white candidates, and a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must accompany the application. Candidates should note that the department reserves the right not to appoint and may use other recruitment processes. Placement will depend on corridor coordination and departmental needs, and only shortlisted applicants will be contacted; if you do not hear back within three months of the closing date, your application was unsuccessful.
