As an artisan, the successful candidate will work both independently and as part of a team, ensuring that all carpentry outputs meet specified standards and client requirements.

To be eligible, applicants must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate and have between zero and two years of relevant experience. A valid driver’s licence is also required. The role demands a solid working knowledge of public service legislation, policies and regulations, as well as the Occupational Health and Safety Act and departmental strategies and procedures. Personal attributes should include being a team player, customer-focused and reliable.

The core duties involve producing designs according to client specifications and within production capability, then manufacturing objects using appropriate materials and equipment in line with job specifications and recognised standards. The artisan must render quality assurance for produced objects, inspect equipment and facilities for technical faults, and carry out repairs according to standards. After repairs, the incumbent must test equipment and facilities against specifications and service them according to schedule. Quality assurance also extends to serviced and maintained equipment. Administrative responsibilities include compiling and submitting reports, providing inputs to the operational plan, and keeping and maintaining job records or registers. The role includes supervision and mentoring of staff, so leadership and guidance skills are important. The incumbent is also expected to keep up with new technologies and procedures for continuous individual development.

This is an OSD-graded post, with the offer based on recognition of experience after the trade test certificate. Shortlisted candidates must provide proof of recognised experience. The selection process includes two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise and an integrity or ethical conduct assessment, both scored as additional criteria during interviews. Suitable candidates will undergo personnel suitability checks, including vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification verification and employment verification. The department encourages youth, people with disability, and candidates from designated groups, including coloured, Indian and white applicants, to apply; a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must accompany the application if applicable. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment and may use other recruitment processes. All applications must be submitted using the prescribed Z83 form accompanied by a comprehensive CV; certified copies of qualifications are only required from shortlisted candidates. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
