This vacancy is for an Artisan Production Grade A-C specialising as a Plumber, based at the Steve Biko Facility Maintenance Hub within the Maintenance directorate of the Department of Community Safety. The role sits within a government maintenance environment, meaning the incumbent will be responsible for ensuring that buildings, facilities and related plumbing infrastructure remain safe, functional and compliant with relevant regulations. As an artisan, you will work as part of a broader maintenance team and be expected to deliver trade services that meet both client specifications and recognised production and safety standards.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate and have between zero and two years of relevant experience, with the eventual salary offer depending on recognised experience gained after the trade test. A valid driver’s licence is also required. The position demands a solid working knowledge of Public Service legislation, policies and regulations, as well as the Occupational Health and Safety Act and departmental procedures. Familiarity with computer-aided technical applications, legal compliance and production processes is essential. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical report writing, problem-solving, analytical, decision-making and planning skills, alongside effective communication, computer literacy, teamwork and self-management abilities. Personal attributes such as reliability, being customer-focused and functioning well as a team player are also important.

The core duties are wide-ranging and practical. You will be expected to produce designs according to client specifications and within production capabilities, manufacture objects using appropriate materials and equipment, and inspect, repair, test and service equipment or facilities against set standards and schedules. Quality assurance is a recurring theme: you must render quality assurance for produced, serviced and maintained objects, and ensure all repairs meet specification. Administrative responsibilities include compiling and submitting technical reports, providing inputs to the operational plan, and keeping an accurate job record or register. The role also involves supervising and mentoring staff, so leadership and the ability to guide less experienced colleagues are important. A commitment to continuous learning is required, as you will need to keep up with new technologies and procedures for ongoing professional development.

This is a government post with specific application and selection conditions. Applications must be submitted on the prescribed new Z83 form, accompanied by a recently updated comprehensive CV, and only shortlisted candidates will be required to produce certified copies of qualifications and other documents. Foreign qualifications must carry a SAQA evaluation certificate. Shortlisted applicants will be expected to undergo two pre-entry assessments — a practical exercise and an integrity assessment — and may also be subject to personnel suitability checks, including vetting, criminal record and qualification verification. The department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from designated groups including coloured, Indian and white applicants to apply, and a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must be attached where applicable. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment, and candidates should note that only shortlisted applicants will be contacted.
