This position is for a qualified Plumber Artisan within the Maintenance Directorate, based at the Bertha Gxowa/Germiston District Facility Maintenance Hub. The role forms part of the Department of Community Safety’s broader maintenance function, ensuring that government buildings, equipment and facilities are kept safe, functional and compliant with relevant standards. As an Artisan Production: Plumber, you will be involved in both reactive repairs and planned maintenance, working as part of a technical team that supports the operational needs of the department. The post is graded according to the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) and offers a competitive public service salary package, with the final offer determined by recognised post-trade experience.

To be considered, applicants must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate in plumbing, with between zero and two years of relevant working experience accepted. A valid driver’s licence is essential, as travel between facilities within the district hub may be required. The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of Public Service legislation, policies and regulations, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, departmental strategies and procedures, and legal compliance requirements. Computer-aided technical applications and production process knowledge are also required. On a personal level, you must be a team player, customer-focused and reliable, with strong skills in technical report writing, problem solving, decision making, analytical thinking, planning, organising and communication.

The core duties of the role are broad and hands-on. You will be expected to produce plumbing designs according to client specifications and within the limits of production capability, and to manufacture or assemble objects using materials and equipment in line with job specifications and recognised standards. A key part of the work involves inspecting equipment and facilities for technical faults, carrying out repairs to the required standards, testing repaired systems against specifications, and servicing equipment on a scheduled basis. Quality assurance is central to the position: you must ensure that all produced, serviced and maintained items meet the expected quality levels. Administrative responsibilities include compiling and submitting reports, providing inputs to the operational plan, and maintaining accurate job records and registers. In addition, you will supervise and mentor junior staff, and are expected to keep up with new technologies and procedures for your own continuous professional development.

This vacancy is advertised with specific equity and recruitment considerations. The Department encourages youth, people with disability, and candidates from Coloured, Indian and White population groups to apply, in line with employment equity targets. Applicants with disabilities must attach a confirmation certificate from a registered medical practitioner. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise and an integrity (ethical conduct) assessment, both of which will be scored as additional criteria during the interview process. Suitable candidates will also be subject to a personnel suitability check, including vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification verification and employment verification. It is important to note that the department will not accept posted, emailed or hand-delivered applications; only submissions via the prescribed channel will be considered. Applications must be submitted on the new Z83 form, fully completed and signed, and accompanied by a recently updated comprehensive CV. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. Since correspondence is limited to shortlisted candidates, applicants who do not receive feedback within three months of the closing date should accept that their application was unsuccessful.
