This vacancy is for an Artisan Production specialising in Carpentry, stationed at the Tambo Memorial District Facility Maintenance Hub and operating within the Maintenance directorate. The role is central to keeping departmental buildings, equipment and facilities in a safe, functional and serviceable condition through skilled carpentry work. As the designated artisan, you will be expected to translate client specifications into practical designs and finished objects, while also carrying out repairs, servicing and quality assurance across the hub's physical assets. The position is part of a structured maintenance team, and you will be relied upon not only for hands-on production but also for supervising and mentoring more junior staff, contributing to operational planning, and maintaining accurate job records.
To be considered, you must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate and have between zero and two years of relevant experience, although the salary offer will recognise any prior, proven experience gained after obtaining the trade test. A valid driver's licence is also essential. The department is looking for someone with a sound working knowledge of Public Service legislation, policies and regulations, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, departmental strategies, and legal compliance requirements. Familiarity with computer-aided technical applications and production processes is required. On a personal level, you should bring strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, analytical thinking, creativity, technical report-writing skill, effective communication, computer literacy, planning and organising capability, and self-management. The ideal candidate is a reliable, customer-focused team player who can work independently within broader maintenance objectives.
Your day-to-day duties will cover the entire production cycle: designing objects according to client needs and production limits, using materials and equipment to produce items in line with job specifications, and checking finished products for quality. You will also inspect facilities and equipment to identify technical faults, carry out repairs, test repaired items against specifications, service equipment on schedule, and confirm that all serviced assets meet quality standards. Administration is part of the job too, as you will compile and submit reports, provide inputs to the operational plan, and keep a job record or register. You are also expected to supervise and mentor staff and to stay current with new technologies and procedures for continuous professional development.
Important application conditions apply. Candidates must complete the new Z83 form and attach a comprehensive CV; only shortlisted applicants will need certified copies of qualifications. If you hold a foreign qualification, a SAQA evaluation certificate must accompany your application. Shortlisted candidates will be required to participate in two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise and an integrity or ethical conduct assessment, both of which will be scored as part of the interview process. Successful candidates must undergo personnel suitability checks including criminal, citizenship, credit, qualification and employment verification. The department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and specifically coloured, Indian and white applicants to apply, and a written confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner is required where applicable. Note that applications cannot be submitted by post, email or hand delivery, and due to the high expected volume, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. If you do not hear anything within three months of the closing date, you should consider your application unsuccessful. The department also reserves the right not to fill the post or to use alternative recruitment processes, and placement may be determined by corridor coordination and departmental needs.
