This position offers an opportunity for a qualified refrigeration artisan to work within the Maintenance directorate at the Dr George Mukhari Facility Maintenance Hub. As an Artisan Production: Refrigeration, the incumbent will be responsible for the full lifecycle of refrigeration-related production and maintenance work, from design and fabrication through to installation, servicing and repair. The role is situated in a public service environment, meaning the artisan must work within the prescripts of relevant legislation, departmental policies and the Occupational Health and Safety Act, while ensuring that all outputs meet recognised technical standards and client specifications.

Applicants must hold an appropriate Trade Test Certificate, supported by zero to two years of relevant experience. A valid driver’s licence is also required, as the role may involve travel between facilities. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate a solid working knowledge of public service legislation, policies and regulations, as well as departmental strategies and procedures. Familiarity with computer-aided technical applications is essential, along with a sound understanding of legal compliance and production processes. In terms of softer skills, the role demands technical report writing, problem-solving and analytical ability, sound decision-making, teamwork, creativity, self-management, communication and computer literacy, and strong planning and organising skills. Personal attributes expected include being a team player, customer-focused and reliable.

The duties are broad and hands-on. The artisan will produce designs according to client specifications and within production capability, then manufacture objects using the appropriate materials and equipment in line with job specifications and recognised standards. Quality assurance is a recurring theme: the post requires rendering quality assurance of produced objects, inspecting equipment and facilities for technical faults, repairing equipment and facilities according to set standards, testing repaired equipment against specifications, servicing equipment according to schedule, and ensuring that all serviced and maintained equipment meets quality benchmarks. Administrative responsibilities include compiling and submitting reports, providing inputs to the operational plan, and keeping a job record or register. The position also carries supervisory elements, with the expectation to oversee and mentor junior staff. Continuous professional development is encouraged, and the artisan is expected to stay abreast of new technologies and procedures relevant to the trade.

This is an OSD-graded public service post, with a salary offer based on recognised post-trade experience. As part of the selection process, shortlisted candidates will undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment, and may be subject to personnel suitability checks such as vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification and employment verification. The department encourages applications from youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from designated groups, with a medical practitioner’s confirmation required for candidates with disabilities. Applicants must also note that foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate, and that only shortlisted candidates will need to submit certified copies of qualifications. The application process relies on the newly prescribed Z83 form and a comprehensive CV, with strict document requirements; failure to comply could lead to disqualification. This is a role suited to a meticulous, reliable and safety-conscious artisan who thrives in a structured maintenance environment.
