This position is for a qualified plumber within the Maintenance directorate of the Department of Community Safety, stationed at the Helen Joseph Facility Maintenance Hub. The role is graded as Artisan Production Grade A to C, which means the remuneration package is determined in line with the applicant’s trade test certification and recognised years of experience. The successful candidate will work as part of a maintenance team responsible for ensuring that departmental facilities and equipment remain functional, safe, and compliant with relevant standards and legislation.
To be considered, applicants must possess an appropriate Trade Test Certificate and have between zero and two years of relevant experience. A valid driver’s licence is also required. The department looks for individuals with a solid working knowledge of Public Service legislation, policies and regulations, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, departmental strategies and procedures, legal compliance requirements, and computer-aided technical applications. In addition to technical expertise, the role demands strong skills in technical report writing, problem solving and analysis, decision making, teamwork, creativity, analytical thinking, self-management, communication, computer use, and planning and organising. The ideal candidate is a reliable, customer-focused team player who can work independently and collaboratively.
The core duties of the plumber involve producing designs and objects according to client specifications and recognised standards, using appropriate materials and equipment. The role includes inspecting facilities and equipment for technical faults, repairing and testing them against specifications, and servicing them according to scheduled maintenance plans. Quality assurance is an important part of the job, both for newly produced or repaired items and for routine servicing and maintenance work. The incumbent will also compile and submit technical reports, provide inputs to the operational plan, maintain job records and registers, supervise and mentor junior staff, and keep abreast of new technologies and procedures for continuous professional development.
There are several important conditions attached to this vacancy. The application process requires the completion of the new Z83 application form, which must be signed and accompanied by a comprehensive, recently updated CV. Only shortlisted candidates will need to submit certified copies of qualifications, and any foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments, one practical and one integrity-based, and may also be subject to personnel suitability checks including criminal, credit, qualification, and employment verification. The department has indicated that it will not accept certain methods of submission, so applicants should review the advertisement carefully. The department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from specific population groups to apply, and a medical practitioner’s confirmation is required for applicants with disabilities. The department reserves the right not to fill the post, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. If no response is received within three months of the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful.
