This position operates within the Maintenance Directorate under Building Services, based at the Tulisa Park District Maintenance Hub. As an Artisan Production Grade A–C in Carpentry, the successful candidate will be responsible for producing, repairing and maintaining wooden structures and related facilities to agreed specifications, while ensuring compliance with departmental standards and safety regulations. The role is production-oriented, meaning you will work both independently and as part of a team to deliver carpentry outputs that support the broader maintenance functions of the Department of Community Safety.
To be considered, applicants must have an appropriate Trade Test Certificate in carpentry or a related field, along with a minimum of zero to two years of recognised experience after obtaining that certificate. A valid driver's licence is required. The ideal candidate will demonstrate knowledge of public service legislation, policies and regulations, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, departmental strategies, and legal compliance. Technical report writing, problem-solving, decision-making, teamwork, creativity, analytical thinking, self-management, communication and computer literacy are all essential skills. Personal attributes include being a team player, customer-focused and reliable.
The duties are varied: you will produce designs according to client specifications within production limits, create objects using appropriate materials and equipment, and ensure quality assurance of the finished products. This includes inspecting equipment and facilities for technical faults, repairing them according to standards, testing repaired items against specifications, and servicing equipment on a scheduled basis. You will also compile and submit technical reports, provide inputs to the operational plan, keep job records and registers, supervise and mentor staff, and stay abreast of new technologies and procedures for continuous professional development.
Several special conditions apply. The appointment is subject to a security and personnel suitability check, including criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification verification and employment verification. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo both a practical exercise and an integrity assessment prior to the interview, with technical exercises scored as an additional criterion. Only shortlisted applicants will need to submit certified copies of qualifications, and foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. The department encourages youth, people with disabilities, coloured, Indian and white candidates to apply, and confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must be attached. Applications must be submitted in the prescribed manner, as posted, emailed or hand-delivered submissions will not be accepted. If you do not hear back within three months, please consider your application unsuccessful. This is an entry-to-mid-level production artisan role offering the chance to grow within a structured maintenance environment.
