The Works Inspector – Building position sits within the Maintenance directorate at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Facility Maintenance Hub, where it forms a key part of the team responsible for keeping health facility infrastructure safe, compliant and functional. This is an entry-level technical role, as no prior work experience is required, but it demands a solid foundational qualification in the building environment. The successful applicant will need a National Diploma in the T, N or S streams, or an equivalent qualification, combined with a passed trade test in the building environment, or registration as an Engineering Technician. A valid driver’s licence is also essential. The role requires working knowledge of several important legal frameworks, including the National Building Standards Act, the Promotion of Access to Information Act, the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act, the Government Immovable Asset Management Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and the Public Finance Management Act, along with municipal regulations and health-specific infrastructure legislation. Beyond technical knowledge, candidates should bring strong communication, analytical, problem-solving and technical skills, as well as personal attributes such as being a team worker, proactive, resourceful, responsive and responsible.
The core duties revolve around ensuring that all new and maintenance work on project sites adheres to relevant regulations and legislation. The inspector will conduct inspections on work already done or planned, ensuring proper quality control is maintained at every stage. This includes compiling estimates of repairs and costs for minor new work and maintenance tasks, maintaining an electronic record system for both ongoing and completed work, and developing progress reports on outstanding and finalised projects. The role also involves developing and interpreting plans and sketches, drawing up quotation documents, compiling specifications, and participating in the adjudication process by providing recommendations on quotations. The inspector will liaise with stakeholders on technical matters, inspect contractors’ work against prescribed standards, and guide contractors on the legislative and regulatory requirements they must meet. Additional responsibilities include compiling payment documents, processing variation orders and deadline extension requests, ensuring effective contract administration, and developing reports on problems arising from projects. The position also requires gathering and submitting information in terms of the Extended Public Works Programme.
Applicants should note that the application process is strict and requires full completion of the new Z83 form, with a comprehensive CV attached; only shortlisted candidates will need to submit certified copies of qualifications, and foreign qualifications must carry a SAQA evaluation certificate. All shortlisted candidates will undergo two pre-entry assessments: one practical exercise and one integrity assessment, and successful candidates will be subject to personnel suitability checks including criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification and employment verification. The department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and Coloured, Indian and White applicants to apply, with disability confirmation required from a registered medical practitioner. Late, incomplete, or incorrectly submitted applications will not be considered, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
