This position calls for a Chief Works Inspector specialising in electrical work, based at the Tshwane District Maintenance Hub within the Maintenance directorate. The role is essentially a senior technical oversight post, responsible for ensuring that both planned and unplanned maintenance, as well as minor new works, are executed to the required standards, within budget, and in full compliance with all relevant legislation and regulations. The incumbent is expected to function both independently and as part of a team, while also providing leadership, guidance, and development to Works Inspectors within the district.

To be considered, candidates need a National Diploma in the relevant streams, or an N3 qualification together with a passed trade test in the electrical environment, alternatively registration as an Engineering Technician. This must be supported by at least three years of appropriate experience. The role demands a solid working knowledge of the Public Service Regulatory Framework and the department’s strategic objectives, along with strong communication, analytical, report writing, financial, computer literacy, and presentation skills. The successful person will need to be professional, confidential, quality-driven, able to work under pressure, and capable of supervising workflow while also handling hands-on technical duties.

The duties are wide-ranging and technically demanding. They include preparing specifications and bills of quantities for unplanned maintenance and minor new work, costing proposals, and compiling estimates for repairs. The inspector will inspect project sites to verify compliance with regulations and quality control standards, interpret plans and sketches, and draw up quotation and bid documents. The role also involves adjudicating quotations and bids, liaising with stakeholders on technical matters, advising contractors on legislative compliance, verifying invoices, certifying progress payments, processing variation orders, and making recommendations on deadline extensions. Further responsibilities include ensuring effective contract administration, resolving project-related problems, briefing contractors and consultants, and certifying fee claims. The post also carries a supervisory and developmental element: the incumbent must ensure effective and efficient workflow among Works Inspectors, monitor the proper use of equipment, stores and expenditure, support the extended public works programme, and administer the departmental performance management and development system. Skills development and training of junior inspectors is a key part of the role.

This is a government position with standard public service benefits and conditions. Applicants should note the specific application requirements, including the prescribed application form and a comprehensive CV, and that foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo pre-entry practical and integrity assessments, as well as personnel suitability checks. The department encourages applications from youth, persons with disabilities, and designated groups, and may apply its own placement and recruitment processes. Due to the expected volume of applications, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and those who do not receive feedback within three months should consider their application unsuccessful.
