This position represents an exciting opportunity for a dedicated nursing professional to join the Nursing Department at Helen Joseph Tertiary Hospital as a Professional Nurse Specialty in the Renal unit. Five posts are available, offering successful candidates the chance to work within a specialised environment of a tertiary hospital. The role is an OSD-graded nursing position, reflecting a level of seniority and clinical specialisation. The incumbent will be expected to provide comprehensive, high-quality nursing care to renal patients, working within a multidisciplinary team and ensuring that all practices align with the legal and ethical frameworks governing nursing in South Africa.

To be considered, applicants must hold a Basic R425 qualification, either a Diploma or Degree in Nursing, or an equivalent qualification that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in the relevant speciality, accredited by SANC and lasting at least one year, is required, along with a minimum of four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration. Crucially, at least one year of this period must have been gained specifically in a Renal unit, either while obtaining or subsequent to the post-basic renal qualification. Enquiries for this post may be directed to the contact person listed in the advertisement.

The duties are wide-ranging and demand a clinician who is both technically skilled and operationally aware. Key responsibilities include performing clinical nursing according to the scope of practice and facility standards, demonstrating a thorough understanding of nursing legislation, and promoting quality patient care as directed by professional standards. The successful candidate will plan and organise their own work and that of support personnel, provide direction and supervision in implementing nursing care plans, and manage the Performance Management and Development System of subordinates. Effective communication is essential, including report writing and constructive interaction with patients, supervisors, and fellow clinicians. The role also requires a commitment to Batho Pele principles, a genuine concern for patient advocacy, and the ability to work shifts under stressful conditions. Furthermore, the incumbent must demonstrate knowledge of the Ideal Hospital Realization Framework, adhere strictly to infection prevention and control measures, create and maintain a safe environment, and actively identify and prevent risks within the unit. Maintaining professional growth and ethical standards for oneself and subordinates is also a key expectation.

The Gauteng Department of Health is guided by the principles of Employment Equity, and applications from all designated groups are encouraged. Shortlisted candidates should note that they will be required to submit certified copies of qualifications and other relevant documents before the interview, and that personnel suitability checks including identity, qualification, criminal record, credit and employment verification will be conducted. Those holding foreign qualifications must furnish a SAQA evaluation certificate when shortlisted. Recommended candidates may be subjected to medical surveillance as required by the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Shortlisted applicants will also undertake pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment. The institution reserves the right to utilise practical exercises during recruitment, and candidates who have not been contacted within three months after the closing date should assume their application was unsuccessful.
