This position is for an Administration Clerk within the Traffic Management directorate of the Department of Community Safety, stationed at the Far East Rand Regional Office. The role is a junior clerical post that forms part of the broader public service administration machinery, providing essential support to the traffic management component. Working within a structured government environment, the incumbent will be expected to contribute to the smooth running of office operations through a combination of general administrative, supply chain, personnel, and financial clerical duties. The role is suited to an entry-level candidate who is organised, detail-oriented, and capable of working with minimal supervision once familiar with the relevant procedures.

To be eligible, applicants must possess a Grade 12 certificate or an equivalent qualification at NQF Level 4. No prior work experience is required, making this an ideal opportunity for entry into the public service. However, a clean criminal record is mandatory, with no pending cases against the applicant. The department is looking for individuals who have a foundational understanding of clerical duties and practices, including the ability to capture data, operate a computer, and compile statistics. Familiarity with the legislative framework governing the Public Service and knowledge of work procedures in a specific working environment will be advantageous. Key personal attributes include good communication and interpersonal relations, flexibility, teamwork, planning and organisation, and strong verbal and written language skills.

The core duties of the role are varied. In terms of general clerical support, the clerk will record, organise, store, capture, and retrieve correspondence and data; update registers and statistics; handle routine enquiries; make photocopies and send or receive facsimiles; distribute documents to stakeholders; maintain the component’s filing system; type letters and correspondence; and keep the incoming and outgoing document register. In supply chain support, the clerk will liaise with internal and external stakeholders regarding procurement, obtain quotations, complete procurement forms for standard office items, control office stationery stock, and maintain the asset register for the component. The role also involves personnel administration support, such as maintaining the leave register, personnel records, and attendance register, as well as arranging travel and accommodation for officials. Additionally, the clerk will provide financial administration support by capturing and updating expenditure, checking the correctness of subsistence and travel claims before submitting them to a manager for approval, and handling telephone accounts and petty cash for the component.

Shortlisted candidates should note that the selection process includes two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise and an integrity or ethical conduct assessment. Suitable candidates will also undergo personnel suitability checks, including vetting, criminal record verification, citizenship confirmation, credit record checks, qualification verification, and employment verification. The department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from designated groups, including coloured, Indian, and white applicants, to apply; a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must accompany applications from persons with disabilities. Applications must be submitted using the prescribed Z83 form along with a comprehensive CV, with certified copies of qualifications only required from shortlisted candidates. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment, and candidates will be placed according to corridor coordination and departmental needs. Due to the high volume of applications, correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates, and if no response is received within three months of the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful.
