This position offers an entry-level opportunity within the Traffic Management directorate of the Department of Community Safety, based at the head office in the Central Corridor. As an Administration Clerk, you will be the organisational backbone of the component, ensuring that day-to-day clerical, procurement, personnel and financial administrative tasks run smoothly. The role is ideal for a motivated individual with a Grade 12 certificate or equivalent qualification, as no prior work experience is required. However, a clean record is essential: you must have no criminal record or any pending cases against you. The department seeks candidates who understand basic clerical practices, can capture data accurately, operate a computer, and work with statistics. Familiarity with the legislative framework governing the Public Service and knowledge of workplace procedures will be advantageous.

Your primary duties will involve rendering general clerical support services. This includes recording, organising, storing, capturing and retrieving correspondence and data, updating registers and statistics, and handling routine enquiries from internal and external stakeholders. You will also be expected to make photocopies, send and receive facsimiles, distribute documents and packages, and maintain the component’s filing system. Typing letters and other correspondence, as well as keeping the incoming and outgoing document register, will form part of your daily responsibilities.

Beyond general clerical work, you will provide supply chain support within the component. This means liaising with stakeholders regarding the procurement of goods and services, obtaining quotations, completing procurement forms for standard office items, controlling office stationery stock, and maintaining the asset register for district offices. You will also assist with personnel administration by maintaining the leave register, personnel records, and attendance register, as well as arranging travel and accommodation for officials. Financial administration duties include capturing and updating expenditure, checking subsistence and travel claims for correctness before submitting them to a manager for approval, and handling telephone accounts and petty cash.

Candidates must demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal relations, flexibility, teamwork, planning and organisational skills, and good verbal and written communication in the relevant language. The department encourages youth, people with disability, and candidates from designated groups, including coloured, Indian and white individuals, to apply; a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must accompany such applications. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity or ethical conduct assessment, as well as personnel suitability checks covering vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification verification and employment verification. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and if you do not hear within three months of the closing date, please consider your application unsuccessful. This is a permanent post with service benefits, offering a solid foundation for a career in public service administration.
