The Provincial Inspector position is based within the Traffic Management directorate at the Wadeville Region, where the incumbent will serve as a frontline law enforcement official dedicated to promoting road safety and compliance. This role is central to the department’s broader mandate of enforcing road traffic, public passenger transport and related legislation. The inspector will be expected to operate in a high-pressure environment, often dealing with congested areas, accident scenes and hazardous road conditions, while maintaining a professional corporate image of the Directorate. The post is structured according to a specific grading system and includes standard service benefits, with the successful candidate being placed according to corridor coordination and departmental needs.

Candidates wishing to apply must hold a Matric Certificate and a Traffic Officer’s Diploma, along with a valid driver’s licence at least code B. At least one year of practical experience in traffic law enforcement is required, and applicants must have no criminal record or pending cases against them. The role demands a range of technical and interpersonal skills, including sound knowledge of road traffic and public transport policies and regulations, the ability to complete law enforcement documentation, and familiarity with vehicle inspections and impoundment procedures. Knowledge of the Firearms and Ammunition Act, departmental guidelines on overload control and escort duties, and the Transport Handbook is essential. The successful applicant will also need good observation skills, strong driving and negotiation abilities, sound conflict resolution skills, and effective written and verbal communication in at least two of the province’s official languages. Good record and resource management, as well as customer relationship management, are also important.

The main duties are varied and hands-on. The inspector will implement planned traffic law enforcement activities, ensure the free flow of traffic through point duty and control at congested areas, coordinate activities at accident scenes, identify hazardous locations, and advise management accordingly. The role includes participating in traffic policing projects and speed testing operations, issuing notices, executing arrests under relevant legislation, and attending court proceedings to give evidence. Additional responsibilities involve escorting abnormal vehicles and loads to ensure safe movement, coordinating overload control management for both goods and passengers, examining drivers’ licences and motor vehicles, and monitoring compliance at Driver License Testing Centres and Vehicle Testing Stations. The inspector will also conduct learner and driver licence tests as well as roadworthy tests. Visible policing and crime prevention form a core part of the job, including assisting motorists, executing escort duties, participating in roadblocks and special operations, and patrolling dedicated areas to warn motorists of hazards. Administrative duties are equally important, with the expectation to maintain effective procedures, comply with the Firearm and Ammunition Act, follow operational plans, take part in human resource development programmes, and promote efficient service delivery to clients.

Notably, this vacancy encourages applications from youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from specific population groups in line with equity targets, with a confirmation of disability required from a registered medical practitioner where applicable. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment, and will be subject to personnel suitability checks covering criminal, citizenship, credit, qualification and employment verification. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment. Applicants should note that only a completed Z83 form and a comprehensive CV are needed at the initial stage, with certified documents requested only from shortlisted candidates, and foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate.
