This position offers the opportunity to serve as a Provincial Inspector within the Traffic Management directorate of the Department of Community Safety, stationed in the Vereeniging Region under the Traffic Law Enforcement Services. The role is fundamentally a law enforcement post focused on ensuring road safety, enforcing traffic and public transport legislation, and contributing to broader crime prevention through visible policing. Operating within a structured government environment, the inspector will be expected to uphold professional standards, engage directly with the public, and work collaboratively with colleagues to maintain the free flow of traffic and safeguard road users.

Candidates must possess a Matric Certificate, a recognised Traffic Officer’s Diploma, and a valid driver’s licence at least code B. A minimum of one year of practical experience in traffic law enforcement is required, and applicants must have no criminal record or pending cases. The role demands a solid working knowledge of road traffic and public transport policies and regulations, as well as familiarity with vehicle inspections, vehicle impoundment procedures, and the Firearms and Ammunition Act. Practical skills in completing law enforcement documentation, managing resources, and maintaining good customer relationships are essential. Applicants should also understand departmental guidelines on overload control and escort duties, be able to work effectively under pressure, and possess strong observation, driving, and negotiation skills. Good interpersonal and conflict resolution abilities, along with written and verbal communication skills in at least two provincial official languages, are necessary for dealing with members of the public and colleagues.

The core duties of the Provincial Inspector are wide-ranging. The role involves implementing planned and approved traffic law enforcement activities, performing point duty and managing traffic at congested areas, and coordinating activities at accident scenes while advising management on hazardous locations. Inspectors participate in traffic policing projects and speed testing operations, issue notices, execute arrests under relevant Acts, and attend court proceedings to give evidence. They are also responsible for escorting abnormal vehicles and loads, coordinating overload control management, and conducting learner and driver licence tests as well as roadworthy tests. Monitoring compliance at Driver Licence Testing Centres and Vehicle Testing Stations forms part of the daily work. Visible policing duties include assisting motorists, executing escort duties, participating in roadblocks and special operations, patrolling roads, and warning motorists about hazards. Administrative responsibilities include maintaining effective procedures, ensuring compliance with firearm legislation and operational plans, participating in human resource development programmes, and promoting efficient service delivery while projecting a professional corporate image of the directorate.

Additional important information about the post includes the fact that applications are subject to strict vetting and suitability checks for shortlisted candidates, including practical and integrity assessments. The department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from designated groups, including coloured, Indian and white applicants, to apply, with a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner required where applicable. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. Applicants who do not receive a response within three months of the closing date should consider their applications unsuccessful. The department reserves the right not to appoint, and successful candidates will be placed according to departmental needs and corridor coordination.
