This position offers an opportunity to serve as a Provincial Inspector within the Traffic Management Directorate, based at Croesus. The role is fundamental to promoting road safety, enforcing transport legislation, and maintaining order on provincial road networks. As one of two appointed inspectors, the incumbent will operate within a structured law enforcement environment, contributing to broader public safety and crime prevention objectives. The role is demanding and requires a professional individual who can uphold the image of the directorate while engaging with motorists, passengers, and other stakeholders in a courteous yet firm manner.
Applicants must hold a Matric Certificate and a Traffic Officer’s Diploma, together with a valid driver’s licence at least code B. A minimum of one year of practical experience in traffic law enforcement is required, and candidates must have no criminal record or pending cases. The role demands a solid understanding of road traffic and public transport policies and regulations, knowledge of vehicle inspections and impoundment procedures, and familiarity with the Firearms and Ammunition Act. Additional competencies include good record and resource management, strong customer relationship management, and the ability to work under pressure. Excellent observation, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills are essential, as is the ability to communicate effectively in at least two of the provincial official languages, both verbally and in writing. Knowledge of departmental guidelines on overload control and escort duties, as set out in the Transport Handbook, is also required.
The core duties involve enforcing road traffic, public passenger, and transport legislation through planned law enforcement activities. The inspector will manage traffic flow at congested points, coordinate activities at accident scenes, and identify hazardous locations for management intervention. Participation in traffic policing projects, speed testing operations, roadblocks, and special law enforcement operations is expected, along with the issuing of notices and execution of arrests under relevant acts. The role also includes attending court proceedings to give evidence and escorting abnormal vehicles and loads to ensure safe movement, while coordinating overload control management for both goods and passengers. Another key responsibility is examining driver’s licences and motor vehicles, conducting learner and driver licence tests, performing roadworthy tests, and monitoring compliance at Driver Licence Testing Centres and Vehicle Testing Stations. Administrative duties, compliance with the Firearms and Ammunition Act, and participation in human resource development programmes are also integral. The inspector must maintain effective administrative procedures and promote efficient, client-centred service delivery.
This advertisement carries specific employment equity considerations, actively encouraging youth, people with disabilities, coloured, Indian, and white candidates to apply, with a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner required where applicable. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo two pre-entry assessments, one practical and one integrity-based, which will be scored as an additional criterion during interviews. A personnel suitability check will also be conducted, covering vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification, and employment verification. The department reserves the right not to appoint and may use alternative recruitment processes. Successful candidates will be placed according to corridor coordination and departmental needs. Given the high volume of applications anticipated, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and those who do not receive feedback within three months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful.
