The Provincial Inspector position sits within the Traffic Management directorate of the Department of Community Safety, based at the Transport Inspectorate in Mabopane. This is a front-line law enforcement role focused on upholding road traffic, public passenger and transport legislation across the province. The inspector forms part of a team responsible for maintaining order on the roads, protecting road users, and supporting broader crime prevention efforts. The post carries a public-service salary structure with service benefits, and the role demands a high level of integrity, professionalism and operational readiness.
To be considered, candidates must hold a Matric certificate, a Traffic Officer’s Diploma, and a valid driver’s licence at least code B. A minimum of one year of practical experience in traffic law enforcement is required, along with a clean criminal record and no pending cases. Strong knowledge of road traffic and public transport policies is essential, as is familiarity with the Firearms and Ammunition Act, vehicle inspection and impoundment procedures, overload control, and escort duties as outlined in the Transport Handbook. Applicants must be able to work under pressure, demonstrate sound observation and negotiation skills, manage records and resources well, and build effective customer relationships. Good written and verbal communication in at least two of the province’s official languages is also required, together with interpersonal and conflict-resolution abilities.
The core duties are wide-ranging. The inspector will enforce relevant legislation by implementing planned traffic law enforcement activities, managing traffic flow at congested points, and performing point duty where needed. Responsibilities include coordinating activities at accident scenes, identifying hazardous locations, taking part in traffic policing projects and speed testing operations, issuing notices, executing arrests, and appearing in court to give evidence. The role also involves escorting abnormal vehicles and loads, and coordinating overload control management for both goods and passengers. In addition, the inspector will examine driver’s licences and motor vehicles, conduct learner and driver licence tests, perform roadworthy testing, and monitor compliance at Driver License Testing Centres and Vehicle Testing Stations. Visible policing forms a significant part of the job, including assisting motorists, participating in roadblocks, patrolling roads, and warning motorists about hazards. Administrative duties include maintaining effective procedures, complying with the Firearms and Ammunition Act, following operational plans, contributing to human resource development programmes, promoting service delivery, and upholding a professional corporate image.
This post carries several special conditions. The department actively encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from designated groups including coloured, Indian and white applicants to apply, with a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner required where applicable. Shortlisted candidates will undergo pre-entry assessments covering practical exercise and integrity, as well as personnel suitability checks such as vetting, criminal record and qualification verification. Appointment decisions depend on the department’s operational needs and corridor coordination. Candidates who do not receive feedback within three months of the closing date should consider their applications unsuccessful.
