The position of Provincial Inspector is based within the Traffic Management directorate of the Department of Community Safety, stationed at the Soweto Region Transport Inspectorate. This operational law enforcement role is central to promoting road safety, enforcing traffic and public transport legislation, and supporting broader crime prevention initiatives across the province. The post is a junior-level entry point for qualified traffic officers, requiring a Matric Certificate, a recognised Traffic Officer’s Diploma, and a valid driver’s licence at least code B, together with one year of practical experience in traffic law enforcement. Candidates must have no criminal record or pending case, and should possess a range of competencies including sound interpersonal and conflict resolution skills, good observation and negotiation abilities, effective written and verbal communication in at least two of the province’s official languages, and the capacity to work under pressure. Knowledge of road traffic and public transport policies, law enforcement documentation, vehicle inspections and impoundment procedures, the Firearms and Ammunition Act, and departmental guidelines on overload control and escort duties is essential.

The core responsibilities of the Provincial Inspector are diverse and hands-on. The incumbent will enforce Road Traffic, Public Passenger and Transport legislation by implementing planned law enforcement activities, managing traffic flow through point duty and control at congested areas, coordinating activities at accident scenes, and advising management on hazardous locations. The role also includes participating in traffic policing projects and speed testing operations, issuing notices, executing arrests in line with relevant Acts and directives, and attending court proceedings to give evidence. A significant component involves escorting abnormal vehicles and loads to ensure safe movement, as well as coordinating overload control management for both goods and passengers. Additionally, the Inspector will examine driver’s licences and motor vehicles, conducting learner and driver licence tests as well as roadworthy tests, while monitoring compliance at Driver Licence Testing Centres and Vehicle Testing Stations. Visible traffic policing is another key duty, involving assisting motorists, executing escort duties, participating in roadblocks and special law enforcement operations, and patrolling roads in dedicated areas to warn motorists of hazards such as damaged road surfaces or vehicle breakdowns. Administrative responsibilities include maintaining effective procedures, compliance with the Firearm and Ammunition Act, adherence to operational plans, participation in human resource development programmes, and promoting efficient, professional service delivery that upholds the corporate image of the Traffic Law Enforcement directorate.

Applicants should note that this is a provincial post with a specific closing date reflected in the circular, and appointment will depend on corridor coordination and departmental needs. The department encourages applications from youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from designated groups, with a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner required where applicable. Shortlisted candidates will be subject to pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment, as well as personnel suitability checks covering criminal records, citizenship, credit history, qualification verification, and employment verification. The department reserves the right not to appoint and may use alternative recruitment processes. Given the high volume of applications anticipated, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and those who do not receive a response within three months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful.
