This position offers an opportunity for a qualified traffic enforcement professional to serve as a Provincial Inspector within the Traffic Management directorate, based at the Gauteng Freeway Unit. The role is central to the Department of Community Safety’s mandate to enforce road traffic, public passenger transport, and related legislation across the province. Two posts are available, and the successful candidates will work as part of a dedicated team responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient movement of traffic, promoting crime prevention, and upholding the standards of the Directorate’s Traffic Law Enforcement component.

Applicants must hold a Matric Certificate and a Traffic Officer’s Diploma, together with a valid driver’s licence at least Code B. At least one year of practical experience in traffic law enforcement is required, and candidates must have no criminal record or any pending case against them. The ideal candidate will possess a sound understanding of road traffic and public transport policies and regulations, as well as knowledge of law enforcement documentation, vehicle inspections, and vehicle impoundment procedures. Familiarity with the Firearms and Ammunition Act and departmental guidelines regarding overload control and escort duties is also essential. Strong skills in record and resource management, customer relationship management, observation, negotiation, conflict resolution, and interpersonal communication are required, along with the ability to work under pressure. Written and verbal communication skills in at least two of the provincial official languages are expected.

The duties of the Provincial Inspector are broad and hands-on. The incumbent will implement planned traffic law enforcement activities, manage point duty and traffic control at congested areas, and coordinate activities at accident scenes. They will identify hazardous locations, participate in traffic policing projects and speed-testing operations, issue notices, execute arrests, and attend court proceedings to give evidence. Escorting abnormal vehicles and loads, coordinating overload control management, and examining driver’s licences and motor vehicles form a significant part of the work. The officer will also conduct learner and driver licence tests, perform roadworthy tests, and monitor compliance at Driver License Testing Centres and Vehicle Testing Stations. Visible policing duties include assisting motorists, executing escort duties, participating in roadblocks and special operations, patrolling dedicated areas, and warning motorists of hazards. Administrative responsibilities include maintaining effective procedures, complying with the Firearms and Ammunition Act, contributing to operational plans, participating in human resource development programmes, and promoting a professional corporate image.

Shortlisted candidates must undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise and an integrity assessment. Personnel suitability checks, including criminal record, citizenship, credit, qualification, and employment verification, will be conducted. The Department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from designated groups to apply, and a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner is required for such applicants. Placement will be according to corridor coordination and departmental needs.
