This position operates within the Traffic Management directorate at Head Office in Johannesburg, where the Senior Provincial Inspector is expected to provide leadership and hands-on enforcement across the province. The role sits at a senior operational level, combining people management with frontline traffic law enforcement duties. A successful candidate will be responsible for supervising and managing subordinates, ensuring that planned traffic law enforcement activities are carried out effectively, and maintaining professional standards throughout the directorate. The post carries service benefits and is a permanent placement within the provincial government structure.

Applicants must hold a Grade 12 certificate or higher education, together with a basic traffic diploma or an equivalent qualification. Practical experience of three to five years as a Provincial Inspector is required, supported by a valid driver’s license code B. A clean record is essential, meaning no criminal record and no pending cases against the applicant. The role demands a wide range of knowledge and skills, including a sound understanding of road traffic and public transport legislation, policies and regulations, as well as the legislative framework governing the Public Service. Candidates should be proficient in vehicle inspections, vehicle impoundment procedures, and the completion of law enforcement documents. Familiarity with the Firearm and Ammunition Act 60/2000, the Code of Conduct, dangerous goods regulations, departmental policies, and guidelines from the Director of Public Prosecutions is also expected. Operational knowledge of overload control, escort duties, the Transport Handbook TRH 11, and guidelines on law enforcement equipment will be tested in practice. Additional competencies include records and resource management, customer relationship management, conflict resolution, negotiation, interpretation, legal evidential skills, observation skills for moving violations and defects, and the ability to work under pressure. Candidates must be literate in at least two provincial languages and demonstrate good verbal and written communication, teamwork, planning, and mentoring or coaching abilities.

The duties are broad and demanding, requiring both strategic oversight and direct operational involvement. The Senior Provincial Inspector will manage and supervise subordinates, implement approved traffic law enforcement plans, and ensure the free flow of traffic through point duty and control at congested areas. Responsibilities extend to coordinating activities at accident scenes, safeguarding those scenes, identifying hazardous locations, and advising management accordingly. The role includes participation in traffic policing projects, speed testing operations, roadblocks and special law enforcement operations. Incumbents will issue notices and execute arrests under relevant acts, attend court proceedings, and give evidence. Escorting abnormal vehicles and loads, coordinating overload control management for goods and passengers, and enforcing road traffic, public passenger transport, and other legislation are all central functions. The position also involves examining driver’s licenses and motor vehicles, monitoring compliance at Driver License Testing Centres and Vehicle Testing Stations, conducting learner and driver license tests, and performing vehicle roadworthy tests. Visible policing, assistance to motorists, patrolling of roads, and warning motorists at hazardous locations such as damaged road surfaces or vehicle breakdowns are regular tasks. Administrative duties include maintaining effective procedures, compliance with the Firearm and Ammunition Act, and adherence to operational plans. The post also contributes to human resource development by mentoring and coaching Provincial Inspectors on probation, assessing their competencies, facilitating training, and supporting development needs. Further responsibilities involve assessing road conditions, drafting reports, monitoring traffic volumes, participating in road safety programmes, and developing pedestrian projects. The role requires promoting effective and efficient service delivery, maintaining a professional corporate image, and ensuring crime prevention through visible policing. The application process follows the standard public service Z83 requirements, with a comprehensive CV attached, and foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. Only shortlisted candidates will need to submit certified copies of qualifications, and applicants who do not meet the requirements or submit incomplete documentation will not be considered.
