This advertisement invites applications for three posts of Senior Provincial Inspector within the Directorate: Traffic Management, based at the Head Office in Johannesburg. This is a senior operational and supervisory role within provincial traffic law enforcement, offering an opportunity for experienced officers to take on greater responsibility while remaining directly involved in frontline policing activities. The directorate is responsible for enforcing road traffic and public transport legislation, promoting road safety, and ensuring the lawful and orderly movement of vehicles, goods, and passengers across the province. The post carries a competitive government salary with service benefits and forms part of a structured career progression pathway for traffic law enforcement professionals.

Prospective candidates must hold a Grade 12 certificate or a higher qualification, together with a basic traffic diploma or an equivalent recognised qualification, and must have accumulated three to five years of practical experience as a Provincial Inspector. A valid code B driver's licence is mandatory, as is a clean criminal record with no pending cases against the applicant. The role requires a comprehensive working knowledge of the legislative framework governing the Public Service, road traffic legislation, public passenger transport laws, policies and regulations, the Firearm and Ammunition Act, dangerous goods regulations, departmental policies, and guidelines from the Director of Public Prosecutions. Officers will also need to be familiar with vehicle inspection and impoundment procedures, the completion of law enforcement documentation, operational guidelines on enforcement equipment, records and resource management, and the Transport Handbook directives on overload control and escort duties. Strong job knowledge, communication, interpersonal relations, flexibility, teamwork, planning and organisational abilities are essential, as are conflict resolution, negotiation, interpretation, observation, legal evidential, and driving skills. Literacy in at least two provincial languages, both written and verbal, is required, along with the capacity to work under pressure and to mentor and coach junior personnel.

The duties attached to these posts are wide-ranging. Incumbents will manage and supervise subordinates through effective people management, implement planned and approved traffic law enforcement activities, and ensure the free flow of traffic through point duty and control at congested areas. They will coordinate activities at accident scenes, safeguard those scenes, identify hazardous locations, and advise management accordingly. The role involves participating in traffic policing projects and speed testing operations, issuing notices, executing arrests under relevant acts and directives, attending court proceedings, and giving evidence. Officers will escort abnormal vehicles and loads to ensure their safe movement, coordinate overload control management for both goods and passengers, examine driver's licences and motor vehicles, and monitor compliance at Driver Licence Testing Centres and Vehicle Testing Stations. They will also conduct learner and driver licence tests, carry out vehicle roadworthy testing, provide visible traffic policing, participate in roadblocks and special law enforcement operations, patrol roads, and warn motorists at hazardous locations. Administrative duties, compliance with the Firearm and Ammunition Act, contribution to human resource development programmes, promotion of effective service delivery, and maintenance of a professional corporate image for the Directorate are also key. Additional responsibilities include assessing road conditions, drafting reports on hazardous areas, monitoring traffic volumes, participating in road safety programmes, developing pedestrian projects, and mentoring and coaching Provincial Inspectors on probation and newly appointed inspectors.

Applicants should take careful note of the special conditions outlined in the advertisement, including the requirement to complete the prescribed application form, attach a comprehensive CV, and submit a SAQA evaluation certificate for any foreign qualifications. Certified copies of qualifications will only be required from shortlisted candidates, and incomplete or late applications will be disqualified. This is an excellent career opportunity for seasoned Provincial Inspectors seeking a senior role within a provincial government directorate, where they can apply their enforcement expertise, contribute to road safety, and help develop the next generation of traffic officers.
