This position is located within the Traffic Management component, specifically the Escort Unit, and carries the title of Principal Provincial Inspector. The role is a senior law enforcement and management post within the provincial traffic environment, tasked with ensuring that road traffic, public passenger transport, and related legislation are enforced and upheld. The incumbent will be responsible for the full spectrum of traffic policing operations, ranging from point duty and traffic control at congested areas to the coordination of speed testing operations, the execution of arrests, and the safe escorting of abnormal vehicles and loads. The context of the role is multi-disciplinary: it involves managing joint law enforcement activities with other agencies, overseeing overload control, monitoring road sports and social events, and advising on hazardous locations. As a principal inspector, the officer is expected to provide leadership and direction to subordinate inspectors, manage operational resources, and ensure that the unit’s performance meets provincial standards.
Applicants must hold a Grade 12 certificate or a higher qualification, as well as a Basic Traffic Diploma. The post requires between six and ten years of working experience in the traffic or law enforcement field. A valid driving licence for code A and code EC vehicles is essential, and candidates must have no criminal record. The role demands a comprehensive knowledge of road traffic and public transport policies and regulations, law enforcement procedures, vehicle inspections, and vehicle impoundment practices. In addition, the position calls for strong skills in records management, resource management, customer relationship management, planning, organising, leading, controlling, monitoring, people management, service delivery, communication, decision-making, results and quality management, problem solving, writing and reporting, labour relations, driving, investigation, motivation, innovation, analytical thinking, computer literacy, and operations or project management.
The duties are broad and include developing and implementing operational strategies, managing traffic policing projects, attending court proceedings to give evidence, and issuing relevant notices to offenders. The Principal Provincial Inspector manages the monitoring of production among Senior Provincial Inspectors and Provincial Inspectors, conducts planning and feedback meetings, assists with human resource issues, and coordinates quarterly performance appraisals. Risk identification and management form an important part of the work, as does the management of administrative activities, the motor vehicle fleet, and the state of equipment. The incumbent also participates in budget planning, monitors monthly expenditure, and implements corrective action where necessary. Effective loss control measures, particularly relating to firearms and other equipment, are another key responsibility.
Shortlisted candidates should be aware that selection will include practical and integrity assessments, and successful applicants will undergo personnel suitability checks, including vetting, criminal record, citizenship, credit record, and qualification verification. Applications must be submitted using the new Z83 form, accompanied by a comprehensive CV, and foreign qualifications require SAQA evaluation. Correspondence is limited to shortlisted candidates, and those not contacted within three months should assume their application was unsuccessful. This is a demanding and rewarding career opportunity for an experienced traffic law enforcement professional seeking a leadership role.
