The Principal Provincial Inspector position is a senior operational leadership role within the Gauteng Freeway Unit, falling under the provincial Directorate for Traffic Management. The post requires an experienced traffic law enforcement professional who can manage and enforce road traffic, public passenger, and transport legislation across the freeway network. The role is central to ensuring road safety, maintaining the free flow of traffic, and coordinating both routine and joint law enforcement operations. As a principal inspector, the incumbent will be responsible for developing operational strategies, overseeing speed testing operations, managing traffic policing projects, and ensuring that all law enforcement activities are aligned with approved provincial strategies.

Candidates must hold a Grade 12 certificate or higher qualification, together with a Basic Traffic Diploma. A minimum of six to ten years of working experience in the traffic enforcement field is required, and applicants must possess valid driving licences for both code A and code EC vehicles. A clean criminal record is essential. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of road traffic and public transport policies, regulations, and law enforcement procedures, including vehicle inspections, impoundments, and the completion of legal documentation. Strong skills in records management, resource management, people management, planning, organising, leading, controlling, and monitoring are necessary. Additional competencies include customer relationship management, decision-making, problem-solving, communication, report writing, labour relations, investigation, motivation, innovation, analytical thinking, computer literacy, and operations or project management.

The duties are broad and demanding. The successful candidate will manage the enforcement of all relevant legislation, ensure traffic flow through point duty and traffic control at congested areas, safeguard accident scenes, coordinate arrests, attend court proceedings, and give evidence. They will also manage the issuing of notices to offenders, identify hazardous locations, escort abnormal vehicles and loads, monitor road sports and social events, and coordinate overload control for both goods and passenger transport. Joint law enforcement activities with other agencies form a key part of the role, requiring planning, execution, evaluation, and reporting on shared strategies. In addition, the position involves full managerial responsibility: providing leadership and direction to subordinate inspectors, monitoring their production and statistics, conducting performance appraisals, and implementing innovations to improve the working environment.

Risk management is another core function. The Principal Provincial Inspector will identify risks, develop and implement mitigation plans, and monitor progress. Administrative duties include managing the motor vehicle fleet, monitoring equipment and replacement planning, and implementing loss control measures for firearms and other equipment. The role also extends to budget participation, monitoring monthly expenditure and inspection reports, and ensuring corrective action is taken where needed. Applicants should note that this is a demanding position requiring strong leadership, integrity, and a commitment to public service. All shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment, as well as a personnel suitability check covering vetting, criminal records, citizenship, and credit history. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate, and the application process requires the completion of the prescribed Z83 form along with a comprehensive CV.
