The Assistant Director: Transport and Logistics post is located within the Supply Chain Management directorate at the Head Office in Johannesburg. This is a supervisory and operational management role responsible for the day-to-day management of transport services, fleet administration, and logistics processes in line with departmental policy. The incumbent will play a key part in ensuring that government vehicles, goods, and cellphone resources are managed efficiently, transparently, and in accordance with public service regulations. The role reports within a structured environment and requires a strong understanding of fleet management, supply chain procedures, and staff supervision.
To be considered, applicants must hold a Matric certificate plus a three-year National Diploma at NQF level 6 or a Degree at NQF level 7 in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, or Transportation Management. At least three years of experience in a supervisory capacity, or as a Logistics Manager, Transport Officer, or Transport Administration Clerk, is required. A valid driving licence for code A and EC vehicles is essential, and candidates must have no criminal record or pending cases. Additional certificates in computer training, call centre operations, transport and fleet management, the Advanced Management Development Programme, monitoring and evaluation, or fleet management will strengthen an application. The role demands a broad skill set including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, internet and email, customer relationship management, ELS and SAP systems, PERSAL, FLEETMATIC, C VISION, transport policy, report writing, presentation, negotiation, facilitation, conflict management, and advanced driving skills.
The main duties are extensive. The successful candidate will manage transport services according to departmental policy, maintain the vehicle asset register, monitor vehicle movements, and keep full records of accidents. Other responsibilities include licensing all departmental vehicles, verifying and processing monthly invoices, compiling payments for fleet service providers, issuing trip authorities, booking vehicles for repairs and maintenance, facilitating the renewal of petrol cards, processing fuel claims, and requesting new fleet vehicles. On the logistics and goods side, the Assistant Director will receive requisitions, process them, receive and inspect goods, capture them on relevant registers, return damaged or substandard items, issue goods as required, conduct stocktaking according to plan, compare counted stock with official records, and capture stock counts on SAP. The role also covers cellphone administration, including processing requests, managing contracts, blacklisting, insurance claims, repairs, and maintaining the cellphone register. Furthermore, the post requires calculating rates per kilometre, processing applications, assisting with quotes, and administering the scheme process for maintenance, repairs, and accidents. The incumbent will arrange workshops for users, provide information and supporting documentation to the Auditor-General and other assurance bodies, and advise users on procedures and reforms. Supervision of employees is central, including ensuring training and development, implementing work systems, and managing performance, conduct, and discipline.
This post is advertised with specific employment equity considerations. The department encourages youth, people with disabilities, and candidates from designated groups including coloured, Indian, and white applicants to apply, and a confirmation of disability from a registered medical practitioner must accompany such applications. Shortlisted candidates will be required to undertake pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity assessment, and will be subject to personnel suitability checks such as vetting, criminal record checks, citizenship, credit record, qualification and employment verification. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate. The department reserves the right not to make an appointment and may use alternative recruitment processes. Appointment will depend on the department’s corridor coordination and operational needs. Applicants who do not follow the prescribed application procedure or who submit late or incomplete applications will not be considered, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. Given the volume of applications, non-receipt of feedback within three months of the closing date means the application was unsuccessful. This is a demanding but rewarding position for a seasoned transport and logistics professional looking to contribute to public sector supply chain management.
