This is a re-advertised researcher position within the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, based in Pretoria. The role is central to advancing the department’s research agenda focused on the socio-economic empowerment of women, youth and persons with disabilities, as well as the promotion of gender equality. As a researcher, you will work within a directorate that depends on robust evidence, policy analysis and knowledge management to inform its programmes and advisory work. The post is graded at a level that offers a competitive annual remuneration package with benefits, and it presents an opportunity for a mid-level research professional to contribute meaningfully to national transformation and inclusive development.
To be considered, applicants must have a Matric certificate and a National Diploma or Degree in Social Sciences, Development Sciences, Public Administration or Management, or another relevant NQF 6 qualification. At least three years of practical experience in the research field is required. The department expects a solid understanding of legislation, governance frameworks and prescripts applicable to research and policy, including the Public Finance Management Act and Treasury regulations. Familiarity with Batho Pele principles, research methodologies, data collection, synthesis and analysis, knowledge management and data literacy is also essential. Key primary skills include diversity awareness, analytical and report writing, verbal and written communication, applied strategic thinking, customer focus, planning and organising, continuous improvement, people management and team leadership. Secondary skills such as budgeting, problem solving, project management, computer literacy, networking, impact and influence, and diversity management will strengthen an application. The ideal candidate is ethical, honest, emotionally intelligent, passionate and achievement-driven, able to work under pressure, maintain confidentiality, and respect copyright and avoid plagiarism.
The duties are broad and include contributing to the implementation of the research agenda, collecting and analysing both qualitative and quantitative data using appropriate tools, conducting literature reviews, and participating in the compilation of executive summaries, reports and presentations. The researcher will prepare and update research data and provide research assistance and support to the directorate. A significant part of the role involves reviewing and analysing policies, bills, legislation and research reports, identifying areas for possible review, and providing inputs. You will participate in forums and meetings for policy dialogue and ensure all research complies with ethical standards and regulations. Collaboration with team members, stakeholders and external partners is expected. In addition, the role supports information and knowledge management: you will assist with data capturing, maintain the Research, Legislation and Policy Register, help identify stakeholders and audiences for dissemination, and support the departmental Knowledge Management Strategy and relevant DPSA directives. This includes facilitating subject matter experts’ contributions to the departmental knowledge hub. Administrative and secretarial support is also required, such as setting up interviews, copywriting and editing, maintaining administrative records, drafting submissions, preparing documents and presentations, arranging meetings, taking minutes, and managing internal and external stakeholder relationships.
Preference will be given to candidates from designated groups, particularly African males and females, Coloured males and females, White males and females, youth, and persons with disabilities, as these groups are underrepresented in this post. This is a re-advertisement, and all those who previously applied are encouraged to re-apply. The position offers a chance to work in a dynamic policy environment where research directly informs the empowerment of marginalised groups in South Africa.
