The Office of the Chief Justice, based at its National Office in Midrand, is seeking two Junior Developers to join its software development environment. These positions form part of the organisation’s ongoing efforts to design, customise and maintain the IT systems that support the judiciary’s administrative and case-related functions. As a Junior Developer, you will work within a structured software development life cycle methodology, contributing to everything from initial technical specifications to deployment and post-production support. The successful candidate will be expected to sign a performance agreement, and the role is a permanent, full-time appointment at a junior professional level.
Applicants must hold a National Diploma in Information Technology, Software Development, or an equivalent qualification at NQF level 6, recognised by SAQA. In addition, at least two years of relevant experience in software development is required. A valid driver’s licence will be an added advantage, but it is not a prerequisite. The ideal candidate should have solid knowledge of programming applications and client-side technologies, including XML, HTML5, CSS, PHP, JQuery, JSON and mobile frameworks. Familiarity with Microsoft SharePoint development, Azure, CRM Dynamics, and web and mobile technologies is also expected. A broader technical understanding of languages and tools such as C/C++, Visual Basic, C#, Java, XML, Angular and any business intelligence reporting tool will strengthen the application. The ability to read and interpret existing complex code, understand its intended functionality, and use testing frameworks for APIs is important. In terms of soft skills, the role demands strong problem-solving abilities, project management understanding, written and oral communication, report writing, presentation, planning, organising, analytical thinking, and computer literacy in Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
The core duties of the position involve designing and developing technical specifications for single or multiple software projects, customising software solutions according to the software development life cycle, and conducting code reviews to ensure quality. Once systems are in production, the Junior Developer will maintain the software, back up files from the back end to local directories for recovery, and ensure business continuity. Other responsibilities include developing test plans, test cases and communication plans, participating in the User Acceptance Testing process, and preparing deployment guides for approval. You will also be expected to report on development progress, results and key metrics, and to deliver solutions that meet the approved business case. Evaluating code against industry standards, applying sound software development principles, and providing quality assurance reports to stakeholders are central to the role. When deploying applications to production, you will initiate the appropriate change management procedures, create and maintain developer documentation, and share knowledge of both existing functionality and new requirements. You will also edit, write and design application content, and store all development code in the appropriate code library.
The organisation has indicated that preference will be given to candidates in line with its Employment Equity goals. This means that applicants from designated groups are encouraged to apply. The relevant technical and human resource contact persons are listed for those seeking further clarity before applying. This is an opportunity for a technically grounded junior developer to grow within a public-sector environment while contributing to the digital infrastructure of the judiciary.
