This position is for a SHEQ Officer based at the department’s Head Office, playing a central role in ensuring that the workplace meets all safety, health, environment, risk and quality standards. The successful candidate will work within a facilities management and public service environment, helping to coordinate, implement and monitor compliance on SHERQ programmes. This is a Level 07 post within the public service structure and comes with the standard benefits attached to that grade. The role is operational and advisory in nature, requiring close collaboration with management, staff and external stakeholders to create and maintain a safe and compliant working environment.
Applicants must hold a Matric certificate or equivalent, together with a recognised three-year National Diploma at NQF Level 6 in Building Management, Safety Management, Construction Management or a related qualification. In addition, the role requires two to three years of practical experience within the fields of facilities management, SHERQ and occupational health and safety. A valid unexpired driver’s licence is essential, while additional certificates in fire marshal training and first aid will be regarded as strong advantages. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a thorough working knowledge of the Public Service Act and Regulations, the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, the Immovable Asset Management Act, COIDA, incident reporting procedures, and the various systems used in facilities and fire control management.
The core duties involve supporting the development and rollout of SHERQ programmes, helping to establish and coordinate an occupational health and safety committee, and arranging ongoing safety training and educational initiatives. The officer will also take part in identifying workplace hazards and risks, recommending and initiating appropriate corrective actions, and implementing and monitoring the integrated SHERQ management system. This calls for strong analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to conduct investigations and compile clear, accurate reports. The role requires a proactive, client-oriented approach, with effective communication and interpersonal skills for engaging with people at all levels.
Candidates should also bring a range of practical competencies, including the ability to operate fire extinguishers, plan and organise work, manage projects and people, apply financial management principles, and use computers and the internet confidently. Marketing research skills are listed as advantageous, reflecting the need to assess and improve compliance awareness across the organisation. Team leadership, people management and sound judgment are important qualities for driving a positive safety culture.
