This Assistant Director position is a senior operational post within the Head Office of the organisation, assigned to the Facilities and Records Management unit. The successful candidate will be accountable for the day-to-day management of the physical workplace, ensuring that buildings, grounds, fleet, security systems and records are maintained to a professional standard. Reporting within a public service environment, the role requires a strong blend of technical knowledge and managerial capability, as the incumbent will oversee both facilities infrastructure and the administrative processes that support it. The post is graded at level 09 and therefore carries significant responsibility for the performance of a team and the protection of organisational assets.

Applicants must possess a National Senior Certificate or equivalent, together with a recognised three-year National Diploma or degree in Building Management, Safety Management, Construction Management or a related discipline. Substantial experience is required, specifically three to five years in facilities management, safety, health, environment and risk (SHERQ), and occupational health and safety, along with a minimum of three years of supervisory experience. A valid driver’s licence is essential. The role also demands a sound working knowledge of relevant legislation and systems, including the Public Service Act and Regulations, the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, the immovable Asset Management Act, telephone and fire control systems, and facilities management systems. In addition, candidates should be proficient in planning and organising, report writing, financial management, project management, people management, computer literacy, communication, problem solving and client service.

The main duties are broad and include overseeing the maintenance of buildings and premises, ensuring compliance with SHERQ requirements and the OHS Act, and managing the organisation’s fleet. The Assistant Director will also be responsible for physical security functions, which cover key control, personnel security, document security and surveillance systems. Records management forms another core pillar of the role, meaning the incumbent will ensure that the unit’s records are properly controlled, stored and accessible. As a manager, the postholder will manage human, financial and other resources of the unit, and will be expected to carry out any other duties related to the function.

Interested applicants should note that the selection process includes pre-entry assessments, including a practical technical exercise and an integrity assessment, and shortlisted candidates will need to produce certified copies of their qualifications and documents. Recommended candidates will be subject to personnel suitability checks covering criminal, citizenship, financial, qualification and employment verification. The employer is an equal opportunity institution and will apply employment equity targets in making appointments, and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Only applications submitted on the latest Z83 form with a detailed comprehensive CV will be considered, and it is important to submit as a single attachment. Late applications will not be accepted, and candidates who have not received feedback within three months of the closing date should regard their application as unsuccessful.
