This position offers a rare and demanding opportunity for a suitably qualified individual to serve as an Assistant Meteorological Technician at the South African Weather Service’s remote Marion Island base. The role is a contract appointment for approximately fifteen months, with two posts available, and forms part of the Marine Section’s atmospheric research programme. Working at one of the most isolated stations in the world, the incumbent will contribute directly to the running of surface meteorological and atmospheric research projects, ensuring the continuous collection of high-quality weather data in a challenging sub-Antarctic environment.
The ideal candidate must hold a National Diploma in Natural Sciences or an equivalent SAQA-recognised qualification at NQF Level 6, with up to one year of relevant experience. Alternatively, a Grade 12 certificate combined with a National Weather Certificate and two years of practical weather observation experience will be considered. A thorough working knowledge of Automatic Weather Stations and Automatic Rain Stations is essential, as is familiarity with South African Weather Service policies and procedures. Understanding of international standards, particularly those set by the World Meteorological Organization and the International Civil Aviation Organization, is also required. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are necessary, along with punctuality, dedication, precision, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a small team.
The duties are varied and hands-on. The technician will assist in operating the surface meteorological and atmospheric research programme, perform regular surface weather observations, conduct upper-air balloon releases, and maintain, calibrate, and verify all related equipment at the station. Quality control of collected data is a key responsibility, and the post holder must also carry out any additional tasks within the defined scope of work as delegated by the Senior Meteorological Technician. Logistical and administrative support for the broader base team is expected, and all activities must align with the rules, regulations, and standards of the South African Weather Service.
Successful applicants must first attend compulsory training at the SAWS headquarters in Cape Town. Deployment to Marion Island runs for a full year, from April 2027 to May 2028, with no option to return to South Africa before the end of that period. The ability to live and work harmoniously with a small group of people in isolation is absolutely essential. Although the base is equipped with email, satellite telephone, and fax facilities, candidates must be self-sufficient, self-motivated, and prepared for work that can be physically challenging and mentally demanding. Long hours in extreme weather conditions, sometimes on duties unrelated to the core technical function, may be required. Short-listed applicants will undergo screening and security vetting, and appointment is subject to a rigorous medical examination and psychometric assessment, both arranged at no cost. This role is ideal for a resilient, technically skilled individual seeking a unique and rewarding experience in atmospheric science.
