This position offers a unique and demanding opportunity for a qualified meteorological professional to serve as the Senior Meteorological Technician on Marion Island, a remote South African research station in the sub-Antarctic. The role is based within the South African Weather Service (SAWS) and reports through the Marine Section, with the successful candidate overseeing a small team of assistant meteorological technicians. The contract is for approximately fifteen months, with the core operational commitment involving a full year on the island from April 2027 to May 2028. This is not a conventional desk-based job; it requires living and working in an isolated, harsh environment where the incumbent must be self-sufficient, physically fit, and mentally resilient. The successful candidate will need to adapt to a small communal living situation, as there is no option to return to South Africa before the end of the deployment, and the experience can affect both physical and mental well-being, as well as personal relationships.
Applicants must hold either a BSc degree or BTech qualification at NQF Level 6 in Natural Science or a related field recognised by SAQA, accompanied by at least one year of experience in surface meteorological observations, or a Grade 12 certificate with a National Weather Certificate and five years of relevant weather observation experience. Previous island experience is considered an advantage. The role requires strong technical competencies, including project management, conflict management, report writing, and communication skills. Because the station operates around the clock, candidates must be willing to work day and night shifts, including public holidays, often in adverse weather conditions. Punctuality, precision, dedication, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are essential personal attributes.
The core duties are broad and encompass both operational and supervisory responsibilities. The Senior Meteorological Technician is tasked with overseeing and coordinating surface meteorological and atmospheric research projects assigned by the Marine Section of SAWS. This includes exercising responsible shift management, supervising and guiding the assistant meteorological technicians, delegating tasks, and ensuring that daily and monthly reports are submitted within prescribed timeframes and in line with World Meteorological Organization standards. Hands-on work involves performing surface meteorological observations, conducting upper-air balloon releases, and maintaining, verifying, and quality-controlling all meteorological equipment at the remote station. The role also extends to report writing, asset control, and assisting other team members with logistical and administrative duties related to the general running of the base. All activities must be carried out in strict accordance with the rules, regulations, and standards set out by the South African Weather Service.
Successful candidates must be prepared for compulsory training at the South African Weather Service in Cape Town prior to deployment. They will also need to adhere to health, safety, and environmental requirements on the base. The work can be physically challenging and sometimes involves long hours in extreme conditions on tasks unrelated to the meteorological function, so a strong constitution and a proactive attitude are vital. Short-listed applicants will undergo screening, security vetting, a rigorous medical examination, and psychometric assessment, all arranged at no cost to the applicant. This is a rare and rewarding role for someone who thrives on challenge, values scientific precision, and is ready to live and work in one of the most isolated places on Earth.
