This is a 15-month contract position for a Communications Engineer/Technician based at Marion Island, a remote South African sub-Antarctic base. The successful candidate will join a small technical team led by a team leader and will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, fault-finding and repair of all communication services and equipment on the base, including satellite systems, radio, IT networks, GPS, alarm and telephone equipment. In addition to these technical duties, the role requires operating cargo handling equipment and supporting other base-related technical functions as part of the wider expedition team. The incumbent will also prepare monthly and annual reports, conduct stock-takes to order spares and equipment, and take part in common non-technical duties expected of all expedition members. This is a demanding role that requires the ability to work independently with minimal support under extreme pressure, while also being a cooperative and effective team member.
Applicants must hold a National Diploma at NQF Level 6 in Electronic, Computer Science Engineering, IT or a relevant qualification recognised by SAQA, together with at least three years of post-qualification experience. Proven competence in electronic maintenance, diagnostics and repairs, with strong fault-finding capabilities, is essential. Preference will be given to candidates with hands-on experience in V-Sat satellite systems, managing computer networks with Linux servers and routers, HF and VHF two-way radio equipment, telephone systems such as PABX and VOIP, personal computers, fire detection systems, GPS units and general electronic equipment repair. Familiarity with test equipment including oscilloscopes and spectrum analysers is also required, as is a good working knowledge of workshop practices, safe use of basic tools, and current health and safety policies. The incumbent must be computer literate, have strong verbal and written communication skills, and be able to work well in a team.
The successful applicant will spend a full year at Marion Island, from April 2027 to May 2028, with no option to return to South Africa before that period ends. This isolation calls for a self-sufficient, self-motivated individual who can live and work closely with a small group of people. While the base is well equipped with email, fax and satellite telephone facilities, the physical and mental demands of the environment can affect well-being, so candidates must be physically fit, mentally strong, and prepared for physically challenging and satisfying work. Long hours in extreme conditions on tasks unrelated to their primary function may also be required. Shortlisted candidates will be subjected to screening and security vetting, and appointment is subject to a rigorous medical examination and psychometric assessment, which will be arranged at no cost to applicants.
